TD5 D2A was idling suddenly stopped, engine now won't turn over

    Hi guys

Following on from my post in "What happened to your Discovery today" I had a couple of hours this afternoon before we left so I cleaned the red plug into the ECU. There wasn't as much oil as I was expecting to see. After the plug dried I tried starting the car and it made a squealing sound then stopped turning over. I gave it another quick flick and it has stopped solid. I'm thinking its filled a cylinder with either water or diesel. I removed the fan put the power bar and socket onto the crank pulley bolt and tried to turn it clockwise, the bar got a nice bend but in it but it didn't move. So I tried anticlockwise and I could move it in that direction but I can't go clockwise at all.

Surely if a cylinder had fluid in it I should be able to go anti clockwise then clockwise until the fluid compresses? I will be taking the injectors out to see what gets ejected but that won't be until we are back Saturday night. Will the fluid leak past the rings over the next 3-1/2 days?

The big question I have is will I have done any damage cranking it over on the starter motor and compressing the water/diesel? The dipstick shows the oil level at the top mark, it recently had a service. The water level seems to be the same. The car drove normally up until the Monday morning.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Cheers, James NZ

Have you tried turning it over with the belt off ( by hand ) James?

The disco lives again. Thinking about the problem further it occurred to me that the serpentine belt wasn't moving, so I removed that and the engine was free. The idler pulley had seized it's bearing. Got a new bearing for $13.08 compared to $254.00 for a pulley from the indie supplier.

Thanks to discorevy for that suggestion as well.

    Cheers James NZ

It's amazing how much grip a poly-vee belt has.

The exact same thing stuck me up in the Flinders Ranges three years ago.

It gave all the symptoms of a dead battery or polling starter motor.

Or Chris, the mechanic from Hawker thought I might've hydrauliced it as all the creeks were up and I'd been through quite a few.

As soon as we popped the top fan cowl off I spotted the swarf everywhere around the bearing

I haven't encountered this before so I was gob smacked that a seized idler bearing could stop the motor whilst it was idling!! Also thought leaking injector o rings may have filled a cylinder.

As far as I can tell looking at the past service history the bearing has possibly done 292501km's, so its probably earned a rest. And yes prices in NZ can be very scary for parts.

    cheers guys.
