    td5 engine saver low water level alarm

    Hi.i have a low water alarm that screws into the bleeder in the top hose,overnight the water obviously bleeds away from the sensor as unless i start the car it blip the throttle the alarm sounds.is this usual for the td5 because my old v8 never did that.

    Is there a drop in the coolant level? If there is a leak it’s doing what it should by letting you know the top hose isn’t full of coolant. Check for leaks or coolant stains before starting at either end of the fuel cooler or the stepped hose at the oil cooler(under/behind the turbo).

    sorry should of said that it isn't using coolant.yes it does work as intended,just wanted to know if it is normal for td5's to do this.if it is not i will have to look further as it may be making its own bubbles and they are bleeding upward overnight,bloody hope not though.

    I have a Perentie - and experienced exactly the same issue. (I realise that it’s not a Td5). Anyway twisting the low coolant sensor so that it was at the bottom of the radiator hose, instead of the top - fixed the issue.

    I was not going through coolant - it was just that the sensor was at the highest point of the system.

    I didn’t move the sensor, just twisted it so that it was pointing down instead of the top.

    It must be getting air in from somewhere, but the system will naturally purge that out.

    Mine senses the level in the bottle so it doesn't give those problems.

    IMO it's normal for the level to drop a bit when everything cooled down cos the top hose is above the fluid's level in tank though you can try to replace the tank's cap with new and make sure it's tightened to max possible. Low coolant alarm is efficient in the tank not in the top hose cos you'll have flow in the hose even if you lost 3 litres of coolant while the engine is running.

    Had a similar issue with my 300 tdi same principle. After a search found a post where this was occurring the fix was to remove the sender and give it a clean, apparently there was a build up on it from the coolant. Cleaned it and all was well, Worth a shot and costs nothing.

    Thats exactly it, the first place you will see the loss is in the tank

    Further had the same issue on m td5 disco after a year of ownership fixed same way.

    I removed fe years ago the bleed screw with cold engine and there was no coolant coming out there, i addapted an automatic bleeder like this Cast Iron - Steel Radiator - Self Bleed Valve Screw / Vent 1/8" Chrome Auto | eBay using rubber to metal bonding compound and that was all so that's why i think that with cold engine the top hose might not stay 100% full . Never had any problems with cooling nor coolant lost at all.
