    has died yet again

Went for a drive in the discovery this evening, battery light came on, noticed the hydraulics didn't seem to be working well.
no power steering or brakes....... next minute car is over heating ..... and then its dead on the side of the road.

Bugger. Probably a fairly simple accessory belt problem.

    Assuming TD5?

Yeah, sounds like serpentine belt broke.
Battery(ie. alternator!!) light on, means it's not charging.
No brakes = vacuum booster is on the alternator which is not rotating, so no vacuum.
power steering is also running via the serpentine belt, also not spinning to give power assistance.
Waterpump also runs off the belt, so not pumping ... leads to overheating in a minute or two(or three or four .. depends on how hot/cold it is).

Serpentine belts don't really just break so easily. Would have had some wear marks, or something to indicate that it was about to break, or come off, or whatever happened.
    Cheers,
    Arthur.

didn't you hear a noise if these things were failing like a noisy pulley. They usually give some warning indication like a chirp or something?
