What the hell is going on here?

Spent 3 months working on our first Land Rover and thought we had got it ready for its RWC. Until yesterday there was no life in any of the electrics, so took a closer look at all the gaffer tape on the cables to find out this Custer of a mess. Understanding that I can just buy a new earth cable to the butchered one that was taped up, the rest of the mess just doesn’t look right and is basically just shoved where the car jack should go behind the ecu.

Any ideas or is this mess for an auto electrician that can come to our home in Melbourne?

    Thanks for advise in advance.

It may be easier to re clamp the butchered battery cables using Crosby clips (wire rope clamps) from Bunnings and some good insulation to get going and take it to a good auto elec

    I'm assuming it's a d2 td5.

surprised after working on it for so long you just discovered the electrics like that.

the d2 is quite tidy normally.

    did you drive it before?

It looks to me that you could just disconnect all the stuff going to the piggyback stuff and you will be back to stock.
It looks like the connectors are the same as the factory ones, and by just pulling them out and reconnecting to where the piggyback ones went it SHOULD be OK.
BUT hey if it runs leave it like it is.

It looks like some aftermarket “upgrade” but supposedly it was running when you got it,or it has been since, so maybe the “add ons” are not the current issue
A question? ....what’s the battery state of charge?

Where in Melbourne? It looks like as has been mentioned, you can just remove the piggy back stuff. Having access to a standard car to see the difference will help.
I'm in the west, if that helps.

It ran fine when I got it and until yesterday. I replaced the insulation under the bonnet and it looks like the extra thickness has put pressure on the bunch of cables when the bonnet is closed.

I would love to know what the “Piggy Back Stuff” actually is. As it just looks like a jumbled up mess of wires to me.

Another person curious about the extra ecu harness and boxes.

On your actual problem when sorted out my harness I used a mta battery terminal (1507704) that has 1xM8 stud and 2xM6 studs and ran one cable to the engine and another one to the body ground. If you take measurements battery world etc can make cables up to suit.
