If you can talk a locksmith into doing it* you can get an all metal dumb key cut to hide. Expect a few questions re your sanity and tripling checking you understand that it's not going to start the car (I mean it will if you've got the EKA code).

I don't understand any of this. When the wonderful ***** ( not a swear filter dodge, just not naming and shaming ) had my car forever AND lost all the keys, I was able to get a couple of spares from ebay, valeo. LR was able, after I gave them my mortgage ( I wish ), to give me the key code. I went to a locksmith ( chain ) who cut the blanks. No coding, no nothing bar the cutting. Said blanks started the car with no issue. OK, the car WAS unlocked already, but the battery had been flat/off for two years. I then used my Nanocom to program the fobs. I'll find out on Sunday if they still work. [bigsad]
The D2 is not a Range Rover. The key blank is not coded in any way, it's just a key blank. Mine, I repeat, would start, before all the palaver with the auto, off just the blade. Course, later cars may be different, but I have been through so much **** with mine I think I'd know.

IMO, locksmiths want $$$ as much as anyone else.

That's interesting, with my '99 D2 a simple key will only open the door and let you turn the ignition barrel but won't start the car and if alarm is enabled doing either will set the alarm off. I need to use the landrover keyfob to disable the alarm and immobilzer before the car will start (or use the EKA)

I believe if the door has been locked with a key, it will disable the alarm and immobiliser, when unlocking with a key. Not sure, but maybe locking with a key doesn't arm the alarm or immobiliser.
