I also bet that if the battery in the Gstring goes flat you cant just get out, push it along for a few meters jump in and dump the clutch on first to get it going again.

I can't wait to drive the Cybertruck on the Canning Stock Route. Oh severe lack of range. OK let's cross the Simpson desert. Oh severe lack of range. Long weekend around the Little Desert in Victoria? maybe enough range. With the TD5 etc. You can always drive to nearest town and fill with diesel. You'd need to stay overnight or more to charge up the Cybertruck. I cannot see the charging infrastructure going through out this country. The population is small and the distances vast. One day we may be able to drive an EV to Perth or Darwin in less than a week.
I will buy a Tesla, one day. Not for off roading. I'll keep the D2 for that.
In China they are ready have battery exchange stations. Battery technology for distance is not there yet, so that's probably the way rest of world will go. But to be sure times are a changin.
If it makes us happy we might consider converting our D2's too electric, at least we can carry a shed load of batteries.[wink11]
China's Nio Lets EV Drivers Swap Battery Quick and Hit the Road
So, buy one. We can have a race. My D2 and your whatever it is. Same day set out. First one to Lake Disappointment wins. No outside help allowed. Wagers, anyone?
The Tesla Model S outperforms pretty much anything the exotics can throw at it. Trouble is, it can only do so once, or maybe twice, before it's off to the naughty corner to be recharged. That power and torque isn't free, no matter what the luvvies want you to think.
Doc Brown's Mr Fusion thing might help you win. But we can't say the N word.
Electric Land Rovers
Classic electric vehicles for adventure — Jaunt
BTW to convert costs about $40K
It’s now possible to convert classic cars to Electric
Quiet a few overseas companies doing this, and now there is a company Classic electric vehicles for adventure — Jaunt Melbourne that is doing conversion for classic Landrovers - should not be too hard to for a D2.
Not sure about range - but the great thing about a 4WD is that it can carry a lot of batteries
Haters are going to be haters, cant change that
This is early days, did you hear about Mark French , the bloke that founded Marks 4WD Adaptors converted a Suzuki 4x4 to EV and drove it across the Simpson , driving into the night till battery went flat , camped and charged during the day by solar only , repeat , Took 4 days . Took me longer the first time I crossed in a Petrol Landy in the 1980's .
Unsealed 4X4 | SMASHING THE SIMPSON DESERT WITH SOLAR POWER
Nothing high tech about it either.
Take a while doing that in an ICE waiting for trees to grow (thanks to solar power by the way) , and then a couple of billion years for them to turn into oil .
At about 2035 we start seeing all LR EV without diesel (so too many governments around the world commit to new EV cars production at the same time).
And some researches said we would still have about 150 - 300 years of fossil fuel until they are all gone on the Earth.
So it seems that all of us still can enjoy whatever it was designed for, although I think diesel/petrol prices in 2035 upwards might be a bit too shocked at some degrees ;)
