In the D2a it was done due to tightening emissions laws, same with the EGR cooler.
To get lower EGTs and more power you need more cooler air. Turbos with suitable compressor map help. As the stock one just starts to make heat as it ramps up beyond spec.

If the car is a keeper ( and it looks like it should be ), then it would be worth the extra initial spend to invest in a variable geometry turbo with specific map to suit, a better intercooler and freeing up of the intake and exhaust ( this can still be factory quiet if you wish, except for a slight but pleasant turbo noise ) .
These mods along with a LOF slave cylinder are what I recommend for manual upgrades and will completely transform the vehicle to the point where you will want to drive it all day even when not towing.
If you just want a bit more power and have a small budget , then remap is fine.
If you want to eliminate lag and have actual grunt below 1800 rpm and have a completely different driving experience then VGT plus mods.
I also use water/meth injection on one of mine to keep egt's down and give more kick.
Andrew at Allisport is always receptive and uses TD5 inside ( Jose's ) mapping.

Just quickly ...get an egt, I mild tune doesn't need it, but everyone always get excited and decides they want more grunt as soon as they see what a mild remap does. You'd be surprised how far you can tune before you get into egt trouble.
Cruise control has to be remapped also once more than a so called "stage 1".

Thats really interesting! Years and years ago I was running a DPL tune with a bit more oompf and the CC was just fantastic. Anyway, he took out that tune and put in a milder one after I warped a manifold (mind you I was driving it at 160km/h down the Stuart Hwy) and the CC went back to being as crappy as normal.Quote:

Tbh it's disappointing. One saving grace if you like, is that most vgt/vnt turbo's control themselves so external input from the td5 ecu is not needed.
As far as performance goes, the end user and the tuner are in no man's land, so all that can really be known is what is gathered from extensive logging, and marketing comments like "180hp" and "22 psi" -- if anyone can tell me how this relates to what the thing will actually do, please let me know!
I have a bit of logging info on the s208b but nothing that I would call rock solid.
At this stage it would appear that maybe the hybrid turbo POSSIBLY has a little more top end , but of course falls back in the low rpm situations, and possibly does increase IAT and EGT, compared to the variable ones.
As to whether one brand is better than an other? Dunno!
If anyone wants to send through some Nanocom logs from other turbo's, I'll have a look, Unfortunately it's limited compared to some other options, but better than nothing.

I'm surprised to hear negative feedback re Storm Tuning. I'm with sierrafery...and I also have a manual...I actually have a Storm tune (Stage II) as opposed to Fb rumours and I've been very happy with it. The Holy Grail of more torque, better fuel economy and zero smoke. The thing I like about it is how progressive it is...lotsa low down torque rather than being too peaky up top. I've had it driven by a LR mech who has seen lots of tunes and he was impressed. Storm was also great to deal with - I have an early Td5 so had to send a spare ECU to UK to get it mapped and they were reliable and prompt.
When you hear stories about people with damaged engines or just high EGTs, you need to know the full context...what other mods they have, vehicle condition, how they drive etc...

You could always give Davis Performance Landys a call in Sydney. I'm pretty happy with the tune in my 90 (also running LPG injection) and doesn't blow smoke at all.
Leaves modified V8 cruisers behind.
Even if it's only to pick his brain.
He's also been working with guys in the UK to develop a new kit.
Wont be cheap but sounds pretty impressive.
