I honestly didn't know bunnings had free trailers? Good to know

is it possible to unbox the rack so that it will fit inside the D2 with the seats laid down?
Or simply take some tools with you and fit the rack in the carpark when you pick the rack up[thumbsupbig]
Put it on the roof rails. Overhang the rails front and rear. Attach the tail end of a strap to the very front of the roof rails a pass it under the item to the front, then over to the same point on the opposite rail. Repeat the same method at the back. This will prevent fore and aft movement. One or two straps attached from one side to the other will control sideways and vertical movement. Ensure the side to side straps take the shortest route.
Not 100% sure Bunnings here in Perth give out free trailers, depends how much stuff you buy I guess, but somewhere like Sand and soil supplies do, even with a half load, say $30.00 worth of lawn sand, $25.00 load of limestone etc. etc.
I bought a D2, flying to Brisbane to collect, intending then drive back to Alice Springs.
In the meantime, I also had a Kings steel rack (with 9" brackets) delivered to the car intending to fit it.
The rack arrived boxed, VERY heavy box and LARGE, taking two of us to drag it about as bit heavy to move easily. (They seem to be built from steam pipe, bit OTT spec.)
We first tried to check that the brackets would have fitted, and found that they had missed sending them, so could not fit rack.
From size of the rack, it also appeared that the rack would not be able to fit inside the vehicle. I wanted to take it and fit later, as no racks available in Alice Springs.
This was the rack with sides, not the flat rack, but I very much doubt that the flat rack would fit inside either. I had to leave rack and organise a Kings pick up and credit.
I later bought a set of three cross bar racks on "Fleabay" (available with 9" or 11" brackets) about $190 delivered, and they are light and strong and can have other bars, or a suitably folded (to make a tray) sheet of aluminium security mesh, mounted joining across them to make a platform, that is light and strong. (cheap light rack, easy to remove.)
I remember the same issue when I got mine(flat rack) but mine was aluminium.
Came in a box with padding inside, and of course no way to get it home.
The place I got it from was only 5klm or so from home so risked it and just strapped it to the roof and drove gently [bigwhistle]
No problem, except initially I didn't think about it properly and strapped it around the upper door(window) frame .. doh!
So re-did it with drivers door open! [biggrin] ... and all good.
Just two ratchet straps via open windows on the other doors, and then just a bit more difficult to close drivers door, but it worked out fine in the end.
ps. as I don't need a rack on my D1 full time, my plan was to remove it for most every day useage and only install it when needed. Hence Al rack, not steel.
Not hard to remove it by myself as it's really only about 20 or so kgs with the legs still attached.
I release the legs from the gutters, lift the rack, place large cushions and slide it off from the rear .. fairly easy to remove and refit.
Hire trailer, or call courier service(with ute type vehicles too). Depending on how far store is from home could end up costing less for a courier too.
