    Pre 2002 chip tuning endeavours

    Hi all,

I've been doing some research recently on tuning a MSBxxxxxx model ECU, while the process of removing the stock chip and installing a socket seems easy enough with some time, the programming devices for the new chip I've encountered so far have been very expensive.

I'm just throwing a line out out if anyone has experience with this and knows of a cheap chip programmer.
The one I've seen used was a Wellon programmer with an adapter, they weren't named by the person using it but by matching up the visuals alone the total price was around 700 USD.

    Any advice welcome, Thanks.

Yeah.... Buy a later programmable one!

    NNN...

There are a few places that will still work with msb units, but for me the idea of having to replace the chip everytime you wanna try some different mapping makes it a waste, but of course I'm probably not the average user!

Map packs/ map definitions for msb units are pretty hard to come by as well.

Unless you start selling remaps the programming gear will never pay for itself.

Msb units do however have a few plusses, they are cheaper to buy and they can run multiple tunes.... Selectable if you know how.

    Cheers

XGecu TL866II Plus USB Programmer for SPI Flash NAND EEPROM 8051 MCU +4 adapters | eBay

    Has the plcc44 adaptor included

I have 2 MSB units already came socketed with TRS tunes, both work in my D2

The blank writable chips are 10 bucks or less ( usually 4 -5 ,that's the decent ones too ) so you can screw up without crying too much.

Haven't bought one yet coz I have been trying ( not very enthusiastically ) to track down the real deal ( as per link above ) not the copy cats.

My aim is to write a stock tune and turn off some things like maf and egr . but my aim was also to be a millionaire by 30 and I am still thinking about that at 57

There are a few 44 pin chip serial numbers that will do as some just have more memory space than you need. I will dig up a pic with chip numbers and post here tomorrow and I think mouser and rs-online have good pricing.

    5PCS~50PCS/LOT M28F102 120K1 M28F102 120KI M28F102 PLCC44 New original|Air Conditioner Parts| - AliExpress

Ordered the above, they are the multi use (erase and reflash) equivalent of the write once AT27C1024 used by the tuning guys.

Also ordered the programmer I linked to in my previous post.

It will probably teach me to go buy a NNN instead !! But ya never know I could get lucky and learn something .
