    Erratic TD5 idle

    Hi all,

Does anyone here experience erratic idle speeds on late model EU3 TD5 D2s and Defenders ?

Especially when at operating temp when the A/C kicks in and out, but certainly not limited to this.

My experience would suggest it's somewhat common in them, but almost unheard of in the early ones.

It's pretty hard to stop them doing it as well!

    Cheers
    James

    What's the operating temp?

Some folks say low-mid 80's. some say high 80's to low 90's.

Mine runs consistently in the high 80's to low 90's. IIRC max I've seen on a 30 degree day and AC on was 92 for a brief moment .. generally maxes at 90-91.
Much more consistent than my Tdi.

This is using the nanocom to get numbers tho.

Could the issue you describe have soemthing to do with temps?

I've never noticed on mine. I will look out for any variance for 'ya too from now on.

Any temperature above 75-80° I guess.

Not all do it, but some definitely do, and I can't pinpoint why.

I should add that of you haven't noticed it, it's probably not doing it.

The ones I've seen are quite pronounced.

Mine is as steady as a rock.
Perhaps injector washer leaks are to blame and they are pretty common.
perhaps look at the injector percent variation on a Nanocom, and it may give a clue.

The injector washers are worth a look for sure, it's something I've considered.

I still think there is other issues at play but I'll be happy if it's just washers.

The injector balance is pretty normal though.

You're right about the early ones. I wish the rest of the car was as reliable as the 10P idle.

Erratic as in lumpy / hunting, or going to higher idle then back, but smooth?
1 of my own has done it on occasion ( the auto ), I'd thought it may have something to do with the egr not being mapped out at the time then promptly forgot about it till now. I thought it a little strange as I didn't have HVAC on . Was smooth but idling high until I selected drive

Bit hard to describe.. But I guess when the A/C engages it takes too long for the engine to respond, it eventually does but then over runs.

Some days even without the A/C, it just has a random idle, about 760 then suddenly drop 100 rpm then make it up.. Then over run again, it'll happen for 30 seconds, then go away for a bit.

I can see exactly what it's doing in the logging I do, but can't see why!

Only one I had do that ( as in idle low, then up to normal ) had retarded cam timing, but always worth replacing injector washers/ bump clearances if they haven't been done for a few years while the covers off.

Have you cleaned the MAP on the intake this can get quite crappy I found that contact cleaner works best it's worth a go easy to get to I also done the one on the air box and the MAF just do them all cold and don't use compressed air use a paper towel on the maps. The maf will dry by itself just don't spray the contact cleaner to close to the maf or you could break the fine wire in it hope this helps.
