I'm not so sure, I installed a catch can, good quality one at about 400,000 and then started to get pill leaks, found that the back pressure it was causing was a bit too much, ended up taking it off and with a bit of work reduced the oil leaks again. Now up to about 466,000

How did you know it was causing backpressure? Did the oil leaks increase?

I wouldn't worry.
That is a very small amount of oil and the hose is VERY old and hard. Probably a jubilee clip at the head would slow it down a bit.

I don't know about the oil thing, but I really, really, really want to squeeze some Sikaflex onto the firewall insulation and push it back up.

Pretty common problem with catch cans,more trouble than they are worth.
Some vehicles normally run negative crank case pressures,if the catch can is not serviced regularly or the filter element not replaced very regularly,increase of CC pressures can cause all sorts of issues.

Back to Epic's question,i would forget the catch can,and maybe tighten up the hose clips on the hose,the oil leak doesnt seem much of an issue.Just monitor it,the oil may have appeared over a long period of time which is probably normal.
Make sure the TD5 is serviced regularly,properly,and it will keep on ticking along.

I have had a good run with and only heard good things about the genuine Mann and Hummel Provent 200. Provents are used extensively in commercial diesel applications and that company is the world's largest filter company, based in Germany. I have had one in for 50,000klm now and changed the filter at 40,000klm. It has pressure relief valving for crankcase pulsing and catches a lot of crap which is what it is designed to do. Saves the intercooler, inlet etc from sludge and hard deposits. Easy to install correctly (have heard of installing the pipes the wrong way around causing oil pressurisation and people not changing the filters every 40,000k causing issues). Granted a TD5 is quite a different beast from my motor.

I have a provent 200 on my td5 and have nothing but good things to say about it stops all that crap entering your turbo in my opinion they are worth having.

I have ordered a new vent thing (The one that says "top" on it as that's never been replaced in my 9 years with the disco)
In my googling, I came across a provent 200. Are these catch cans definitely a good idea? With my motor being over 423000km now, want to ensure old girl keeps running for long time to come! Especially since the hand controls install, can't have the motor die on me!
How easy are they to install? As in get pipes in correct order? And where to mount one.
What hose type needed for installation as well?

The vent thingy marked “TOP” is a Depression Control Valve aka DCV. The PROVENT has it’s own control valve/s so you really should delete the factory DCV and replace it with a brass elbow so the PROVENT alone “manages” the crankcase ventilation that way the PROVENT will perform as designed.
