As the number of experts and the anti Mechanic chatter has grown louder than a mis-diagnosed big end I'll bow out of this thread, thanks.

Its not a lifter, any lifter making that much noise would have a serious miss when running. Even a big end hammering away with that much noise would more than likely have a running issue however there is still a very high chance.
At least drain the oil and look for any glitter in it, if its a big end then there will be non metallic shavings in it from the shell.
You can get enough room to drop the sump sitting the chassis on stands, wheels off and lowering the diff as far as it will go then just check all the caps, a dead one will be easy to spot.
for that amount of noise its a good chance of it being a flex plate, you should be able to check it thru the inspection hole in the bottom of the bell housing or feel it knocking by putting your hand on the bell housing while its running.
Don't rev it while you're under there, if it lets go you've got nowhere to go.
Foot on the brake and drop it into gear at idle, it will either get better of get worse with the load, a big end will normally stay the same.
Cheers.
Well...he has certainly got plenty to work with, from transmission issues to big end and everything in between...just illustrates the diversity of Land Rover drivetrain potential problems

Ok after checking everything , we found the Knock ... It is a broken piston skirt on No 5 ... nothing else wrong .
Now the problem of tracking pistons down ... Tried everywhere and just get blank , nope not available for the v8 and even the engine reco guys that I rang tried to locate some and non anywhere according to them ?
What do you think about just swapping the one dead piston out with a good used one ?????
I am at a loss as to what the flaming hell to do now :- (
