Are the transmission from v8 and td5 exchangeable?

For some reason I'm assuming auto .. most folks call the manual a "gearbox" ... and an auto a "transmission" .. but need to be sure.

If auto, then the bell housings can be exchanged, and torque converters modded .. but I think the autos' main input shafts are different, and if so, to replace = a rebuild anyhow.
But I'm not 100 % sure on this, I think I read this somewhere.

I do know that the manuals are different(mainshaft) for sure(again different main input shafts).
