I have two spare pumps. A "young" VDO as mentioned in my first post and a not so young (~100,000km) VDO. I've also got a set of genuine injector washers and o-rings.
I'll do the pump (and the gearbox mounts) over the weekend. If that's a bust, as you say, at least I know.

Fingers crossed but at least the washers and o-rings only takes a couple or three hours....
You didn't mention it was VDO in your first post, so it's good that it is.
Enjoy the weekend working on it

So, before I fully remove the "stuff" in the rear of the car would you say that this indicates a dead or dying pump or should I just head off in the injector seals direction ?

12.6A draw with engine running is a quite normal draw for the pump, rule the injector copper washers

Thank you Sir... I suspected that this would be the case but at least some good came out of removing the drawers, etc. I discovered that the carpet in the back is quite wet and now that it's all lifted I can get a heater in there to dry it properly. I'll drag out my spare washers and o-rings and the trusty torque wrench and have at it.
It won't be for a couple of days though which will give a new rocker cover gasket time to arrive...

Yesterday (Sunday) arvo and evening I ended up with a heap of spare time so I decided that I'd make a start on the injector washers. I got to the stage where all I had left to do was to put the rocker cover back on so I just used the old gasket so I could test it without too much oil spraying around the place.

Took it for a drive and all seemed well.
This morning I went to start it and guess what ? No start. Lots of high speed cranking and eventually it sputtered into life. Lots of swearing and cursing...

Changed the fuel pump and took it for a drive - all OK. It's now sitting in the driveway for a few hours to see if the pump really was the culprit all along.

At least I have dry carpet, a new injector loom, new washers and o-rings and a pump that's a whole lot quieter than the old one.

Well if the pump is a whole lot quieter....

Unless doing the injector stuff stopped Cavitation of course....you might have found the culprit.

It's always handy if you know of another local vehicle you can compare noises and behaviour too.

This morning the old pump was still very noisy - doing the injector stuff made no difference to the noise or anything else, really.

The new (ish) pump is a LOT quieter. Current draw with ignition ON and engine not running is around 12.5A and current draw with the engine running is 13.5 - 13.7A Up to 13.8A while the bleed process was running.

At this stage I'm blaming the pump.

Whilst you should be able to hear the pump running, you need to listen for it on a D2, if it was very obvious it was running, that would suggest pending failure

Now that I've got the carpet and the drawers back in place I can hear it quietly humming in the background. When the engine is running I have no hope of hearing it inside the car. I wish I'd made a recording of the old one screaming it's head off...

Yeah, you shouldn't be able to hear the pump when in the car with the engine running, not even close to hearing it!
