I believe coolant flow through the heater core is constant.

Yes it is no water valve in there.

All diverting done by air flaps.

I notice though with mine (I have no experience with other D2s) that if I am on heat and turn a/c off flaps stay in that spot so next time I get in and drive off (and it may be a moderate day so I don't use aircon) I have hot air coming through vents as car is moving and I have to turn a/c on and change temp setting to cold.

I hate any overheating in a vehicle with an obsessive almost unhealthy passion and will always track it down to the nth degree and change to a thicker aftermarket radiator if it is the culprit or I deem it borderline.

As heat will always win over cold, in the condenser/heater box, any flow through the heater core will cause a/c output to feel mediocre.
Could the ecu recognise that coolant temps are above normal and allow flow through the heater core, for additional cooling capacity?
Now that normal cooling is restored, no heater core flow, better apparent a/c performance?
Just spit balling on why a/c is now cooler.
Doesn't explain the same symptom on my D1, they're not that smart.
