Supporter2004 TD5 runs great, until the horse float is connected and we drive a few Kms. Then will not rev passed 3000 and even there it's a slug. If we stop, switch the vehicle off and start again it goes hard for a minute or three before reverting back.
Googled this to death, yesterday took it to an auto electrician who disconnected the unused reversing light wire at the trailer plug. He said hw will research the knowledge base and network and get back to us. Said that the apparent improvement we experienced will probably not last, said he thinks there has to be something else causing it.
The car has had a new turbo modulator, break sensor switch and MAF recently, other EGR sensor cleaned, it is stock tune.
If anyone has any advice from similar experiences, it will be greatly appreciated.

Is the engine warmed up, or does it do it when it is cold also?
If it is getting hot while towing it can depower itself.
On the temp gauge on the dash the difference between normal and hot is about 1/2mm, so you need to note its position against the background really really carefully.

SupporterThanks for the prompt response, no it's not getting hot. It will do it before the temperture gauge has reached normal position, just a few kms from our front gate. Also it will return to normal simply by switching the vehicle off, disconnecting the trailer and immediately driving on.Originally Posted by Slunnie

SupporterBorrowed a nanocomm and detected the low flow rate of the MAF. Replaced it. There was one error "Driver Demand error" think it was #2. That apparently is related to throttle sensors. However, the loss of power does not occur without the trailer connected, ruling that one out I believe.

SupporterNo longer have the nanacomm so don't know what the coolant temps are. I know that the needle on the dash is not a good indicator, but I have said that the problem can occur before it gets up to temp. It will go way if the trailer is unplugged and the car is the same temp, whatever that is.
I reset the faults.

Interesting. So the problem occurs with the trailer attached and plugged in, but doesn't occur with the trailer attached but not plugged in.

I'd be changing the fuel filter first just to make sure it wasn't blocked and hard to say without eliminating possible sensor faults with live values on a scan tool but probably fuel pump if it's not been replaced.
