    Transmission or XYZ switch?

I’m considering the purchase of a D2 that is having some issues selecting reverse. It will select when shifting from P but not from D. Has anyone experienced similar? Does it sound like a switch fault or transmission? Vehicle has only travelled 140k kms and looks like very little off road, however, boot around transfer lever is well used. Doesn’t look like it’s been a tow tug either. Bit of a mystery.

What does it show in the odo screen? What light comes on in the selector? If those are normal then it's probably not the switch. But the XYZ doesn't actually select the gear, the cable does that. The switch tells the computer what gear has been selected. I know that is an oversimplification, I'm only trying to show that there is a third place to check and that is the cable. Even the nut holding the selector arm on to the trans could have come loose. They seem pretty sensitive to adjustment.

As for the boot, do you mean the gaiter in the console or the rubber boot beneath it? Mine has done 350K and there is little wear to that gaiter, and I have certainly used the transfer lever a lot.

140K is just a baby, so unless there's been abuse or poor maintenance I'd expect the trans to do more than that.

EDIT: On the occasions my trans has failed reverse was the one gear that DID work. FWIW.

Yes, my understanding was limited to the two possibilities and hence my turning to the more knowledgeable. I’ll have a better look this coming weekend if it hasn’t sold in the meantime, and also pay more attention to dash display. It’s the console gaiter I was referring to. Both handbrake and transfer lever gaiters are similarly worn. They look shocking! Seems strange for a low km vehicle.
And reverse seems to work fine once selected, it’s just the oddity of not selecting after being in D.

Far more knowledgeable people than me on here, but I do have some experience of trans issues in a D2

That could simply be down to aggressive cleaning products, or that things were loosely stored there, or they were replaced with cheap aftermarket ones.

The oddity you speak of could be the cable mechanism... coming to reverse from the opposite direction, so to speak, could see it not pushing/pulling the selector quite far enough. The XYZ moves with the selector arm, so the display could also indicate a misadjustment.
All this is guesswork of course.

The leather is poor quality as to finish, both my D2 and D2a have the issue you talking about with the gaiter looking 'shredded' but this is only the finish and not the leather itself. The D2a has not been off road or towed but the gaiter is awful.

As most will attest to the XYZ switch is problematic and as such it is important to check the display to match the console.

Just a a warning, my xyz switch wasn't working properly but the dash display was fine, make sure the reverse lights are working when reverse is selected, if they are not, that's likely the switch.

I recently had my XVZ switch rebuilt.

Prior to the rebuild there was a lot of slop in the shift lever & if it missed a shift the M & S lights would come on.

You have some good Landrover Indies down your way why not see if they can do a prepurchase inspection?
    Cheers

I would suggest that you had two things repaired simultaneously. The XYZ switch on its own can't be responsible for slop in the shift, as it merely piggybacks on the selector shaft into the trans. A good shop would have addressed wear or slop in the mechanism while they were at it.

One of the best. It’s a matter of getting in with JC. I’m working on a pricing for worst case scenario at the moment. Keen to get a better understanding of transmission operation and other’s experience in the meantime.

The boots on the handbrake and slow range are cheap on ebay and easily replaced.

Its just a matter of prising out a spring base on the selector and ditto the handbrake.
