    My First breakdown.

New to me Disco has been getting some love. P/S pump, tranny service. Diff and transfer oils. A set of gauges. Oil, boost and temp.
The temp gauge paid for itself, today. I hope.
The reading dropped to 40c, default reading, after a run along the freeway. Straight away, I knew that the sender was dry. Disco dash gauge still happily sitting mid range.
I pulled over, turned her off and popped the bonnet. Sure enough, the little two inch long hose that sits beside the block at rear lhs, which I had made a note of week ago as being very soft, had split and was spewing high pressure coolant.
Note to self. Fix things BEFORE they break. 🤦
On the bright side, it's only a twenty minute walk home. Pick up the spare car and some tools, water, hose and do some road side repair.

Congratulations, you've started on the long, sometimes annoying, journey of discovery (pun intended).
You'll get plenty of advice and sympathy here and none of us will pass you if your bonnet's up.

A low coolant alarm sounds like a good idea.

Discovery 2 early Td5 and Range Rover P38 header tank - AlliSport

These are not cheap, but are well made. Some come with a poor quality cap, but that is easily replaced. The newer ones appear to have a different cap, so that may not apply.

I put one of these : 200V 1A Vertical Float Switch - Altronics into my old Volvo header tank. Wired it up to the brake fluid warning circuit.

A bit cheaper way to get a level sensor is getting the BMW expansion tank that has a ready place for one.
    In example this one
    Amazon.de
    Part# 17111712641

    And a sensor
    https://www.amazon.de/-/en/gp/product/B07DW1H4S5

Only difference in the tank to LR one if the the hose exit on the bottom.
LR as it in ~45 degree angle and the BMW has it in 90 degree angle.

The hose will be a bit of a tight spot among all thee wires etc under the fuse box, but will fit and work.

Have these on my TD5 and just now ordered for my V8 too. Haven't wired the TD5 tho yet.

But you still end up with a plastic tank that needs regular replacement.

Surely there are other parts of the system that need regular replacement though. Just eliminating only one of them is just prolonging the inevitable.
