    Catalytic Converter hitting Chassis

Hi, Just noticed my Catylitic Converter very close to the chassis ( 1 to 2 mm ),
I figure this is one of the noises I'm hearing in my new D2.
Interested if anyone else has this issue and best way to reposition it a bit further away.
    Regards
    Nick

one of 3 possible things(before you look at the more complicated fix.

first up! Is it V8 or TD5?

    some things to look for.

Check for the rubber hangar mounts. these do break over time, or some not so careful mechanic may have removed to fix something and never put back.
You will see small rid like spikes along the exhaust pipe, with ball shaped ends. rubbery mounts slip over these tubed spikes on the exhaust and above the exhaust mounted spikes will be body mounted spikes where the rubber mount also slides onto.

Brothers TD5 had one missing forward of the centre muffler and hit in some situations. I have spare v8 bomb for parts .. rubber mounts are the same.

On a TD5(standard system) you should have 4 of these rubber hangar mounts.
IIRC on the V8 you only have 3.

The other thing to look for is if the exhaust has been replaced/fixed/modified, and have they done a decent job of it. That is allowed clearance between various bits.

    You are spot on.
After having a bit more of a gaze at the whole exhaust, the main centre muffler has been replaced.
So I removed it , and adjusted the rods on the muffler that hang onto the rubber hangers.
I reinstalled the muffler and instead of a 1 mm gap between the Cat and the chassis, I now have a healthy 15 mm gap.
So it worked, and the horrible harsh vibration at 2100 revs has mostly gone away.

    But , I also reckon my engine mounts are about 3/4 sagged;
If I replaced them further down the track I might (?) need to readjust the muffler hangers again.
We'll see when the time comes.

    Regards
    Nick

Only use genuine engine mounts, they're not cheap but cheaper than multiple non genuine.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

So more than likely then, it's a TD5?

    Follow this advice!

I've read way too many problems too with non genuine/cheapo/ebay type engine mounts.

(still assuming it's a TD5) IIRC there is a lot of info regarding the condition of the engine mounts(do some searching) there is a small hole you can easily access from underneath on the body of the mount. You can poke into it with something(eg. blunt end of a drill bit) and get a gauge for how much depth the mount has within. More depth = less collapsed, less depth = more collapsed mount. Can't remember exact numbers but I think it should allow a depth gauge of about 10mm or so when new.
(if this is wrong, someone may chime in and correct it)

Unfortunately I believe genuine mounts are
    on back order everywhere.

However non genuine aren't worth having, bit of a bad situation!

My genuine mounts had just over 20mm clearance (poked scribe in hole and measured it) when fitted over 12 months ago. Looked about the same couple months back when I put the torque converter in.

The ones that came with it were trying to squeeze out them bottom holes, I thought it was normal for them to sit that way !! Things you learn....especially the expensive things...

As soon as you mentioned 2100 RPM vibes we all knew 'TD5'

The handbrake drum is a notorious source of vibes at those revs too. A simple adjustment fixes it.

What simple adjustment might that be? Does it involve one of these...

and if so where should I apply it?
I have a Defender TD5, ergo I have vibrations/rattles etc so one less would be nice
