    Lady Daphne II's latest shenanigans!

    Hi All,
Lady Daphne II (MY03 DIIA Td5) arrived home on the back of the RACQ tilt-tray truck again yesterday. (Third time in just over two weeks! (Don't ask!) The driver and I are now on exchanging birthday card terms...)
This time was was returning from the next town up the road, when I first started to notice some odd vibration. Stopped to check wheels/tyres. When rejoining the highway noticed sluggish acceleration and more vibration. Trying to make it the 15km home, I pressed on, hoping it might only be no.5 injector dropping out due to an oiled-up connector, as happened a few years back.
But no, power continued to fall and vibration/rough running getting worse. Made it another 5km or so when I couldn't maintain 60k up a slight incline and pulled into a layby. The engine shuddered to a stop after a few seconds and didn't want to start again.
Theory no.1 is that the fuel supply gradually failed?
This morning I put 20L of diesel in from a jerrycan (gauge said about 1/4 yesterday) and popped a charger onto the battery. Now when I turn the ignition on, I can't hear the fuel pump running. I can feel and hear the pump relay (R1) operating. Also tried swapping R1 with another yellow relay.
So does this sound like a dead fuel pump? Any other ideas, please?
    All help much appreciated.

So, is a stuffed fuel pump the only theory? Any other culprits perhaps involved? Is it known for connectors to 'still working' fuel pumps to be dodgy? Or is this just wishful thinking??
    Thanks guys and/or goyles.

If you have power at the pump connector, then yep, definitely fuel pump.

20 years is a great run from the pump as it's probably pumped over 45 000 litres through the injectors and circulated a hell of a lot more.

If the injector washers have been starting to let go, the pump will die sooner as they don't like to cavitate.

    VDO as listed above

Thanks guys. So, a new pump it will be. Can anyone point me to a write-up of a pump replacement/repair please? For example, what to use instead of special tool LRT-19-009 for the locking ring. And any tips on fitting the VDO pump into the pump housing (which RAVE says can't be done...).
    Thanks again.

This how too is easy to follow:

    www.discovery2.co.uk / TD5 Fuel Pump replacement.

We used the same chisel method too using screw driver. Easy enough.

I found that getting the pump back on was the hardest part of the whole exercise, where the pump body is spring loaded and needed a fair amount of force to keep it compressed, so you're fighting it's rebound pressure while trying to fiddle getting the ring back on. Not impossible, just not as easy as a couple of screws or bolts or whatever.

Other thing to note is the quick release connectors for the fuel lines.
Can be done by hand, but a lot easier with a proper tool. They age and get harder to compress the clips.

These types of pliers work well for releasing those fuel clips.

I did the VDO into the housing thing. Take photos before you pull the old one out. Help to put the part in correctly. The hardest part I think was crimping the hose clamp. Be carefull with the float, as mine turns on the fuel low light about 200kms before empty not about 100km.
