Just got the message that the adaptor is back in stock!!!

Order in, and. excited! Will be a while till it gets done but this is the final part of the puzzle.

So now the next step is the auto itself and these are pretty good value from around $2k but bullet proof it would appear and then the controller and BMW shifter which are really cheap!!

Am I right in reading that it's just the ZF auto to TD5?
You still need the ZF to LT230 adapter?

It's going to be an expensive kit by the time it's landed in Aus.

What is the gain from from the swap? Just more gears? Stronger box? Better shifting?

Keen to see how it all goes. Are you going to bother getting it engineered?

Putting the cost into context, rebuilding a 4hp is going to cost around the $4K mark and there is still the torque limitation inherent in the gearbox, plus the cost of the Ashcroft v8 kit and torque convertor to suit although I do have this already but held off waiting to see whether the kit would be be available again, its taken almost a year since I first signed up. Had been contemplating the fitting of the kit before the summer treks but will hold off now.

Sure it is simpler no doubt to rebuild a 4hp but in answer to your questions, yes its more gears, much stronger box 700+nm and infinitely better shifting (actually don't mind the current lazy shifting by the way). There is also the benefit of on my D2 (4.37 diff kit) I will finish with a low ratio of around 60-1 in low range first.

As well as this, I am currently running 26 psi boost and this triggers mario and stan if I put the boot in already, the turbo set up is designed to go to 35psi. I should note that I have good power and torque already but there is no safety net with the 4hp as I see it.

Currently running 32" with those diffs and its 2800 at 100kph, do think this a little too high but the benefits up the VHC are palpable going down hill especially with the engine braking and even enjoyed the hill descent down some Walhalla tracks. So am going to change it up to 33" post this and get the cruise back to a low 2000's on the cruise.

To my understanding that is not a requirement, sure changing engines may but the gearbox is not within the same legislation, will check it up though.

Unless the conversion changes the vehicle structurally, swapping gearboxes doesn't require engineering.

    Same question.

Totally agree on the cost thing. Rebuild a 4HP22 and you still have a 4HP22.

Can you keep this thread going, or do a build thread?

    Hi RRT,

Are you able to send me a recording log from the Autobox section when this happens?

    What TCU is this with?

    Cheers

Could be a good thing even though 1st gear mightn't get used much, but keep in mind when doing the sums that, as well as the auto to transfer adapter you will need to add around $2000 for the stand alone controller plus wiring plus probable propshaft mods, plus possible gearbox mount bracket fabrication etc.

Yep, I think this will be the only way to push big HP through a Td5 and have an auto. I've read from Synchro and MWMachines that this is a really good and smooth setup with the Td5 while still using the BMW TCU. Great stuff.

    Nice!

How to intend to control the 8HP? Will you use a Compushift or a BMW TCM? Will the Td5 ECU and the TCM need to be able to speak to each other? Or does the Td5 ECU get programmed as a manual gearbox specification so that it's not tying to work in conjunction with the TCM?

How does the transfer box fit onto the output of the 8HP? Will custom driveshafts be required due to different lengths/positions?
