    I give up

Okay, so I got all of the bugs worked out of the cooling system on my Disco and took care of the transmission switch glitch (the two blinking green lights). I went to get on the road to Nebo from Sydney. I got to Muswellbrook and trouble started. First, the gearbox would not stay in low gear when cruising along at 90 kph, and any time it did go into low gear, it felt like the front end was going to shake apart. Then the overheating issue that I got rid of came back just on the north side of Muswellbrook. Stopped for lunch to give the disco a rest. Got it up to Tamworth when it decided to straight up overheat. No water in the oil, just boiled over. Has a new water pump, new thermostat, new viscous fan clutch, and a new upper cooling pipe. Oil levels were good. It was at that point that I decided to turn back towards Sydney. It took me 12 hours to limp it all the way back along back roads to keep the engine temps down since the gearbox would not stay in low gear at all anymore. Got it to about 40 kms out of Sydney when the upper coolant hose exploded (I topped up and bled the cooling system several times on the way back, and I noticed bubbles in the expansion tank - The head gasket was gone). Managed to limp it the last 40 km to where I started from and park it. I said “f-ck it” and just drove it back because at that point, the cylinder head was already toast, as was the engine block, as was the turbo, and as was the gearbox.

This was a monumental failure the likes of which I have never suffered with any vehicle at any point in my life.

I can’t afford to put another engine or gearbox into this thing, so I give up. This vehicle has proven to be by far the most unreliable heap that I have ever owned in my life. So now I need advice:

How to I get rid of this thing quickly without taking a total loss on what I have spent on it? I have to buy a different vehicle to get to QLD in one piece, and as I said, I can’t afford to replace the engine or gearbox in this thing, and u less I can put a new engine and gearbox in it, I won’t trust it to get me anywhere safely…

I love the disco. It’s comfortable….but I have zero confidence in the way the TD5 engine and transmission were built for the 2001 model year.

I just flicked very very briefly through some of your older posts. It sounds like the problem has been going on for quite a while given the previous owner had given it a new radiator or something.

I dont have any answers for you though, sorry. I hope there is an easy fix for it.
    Cheers

Yeah, I had a hell of a time getting the air out of the heater matrix, but once I had it purged fully, it wasn’t an issue anymore after that…until I tried to make my journey north…

Do you have a budget for a new vehicle?

You could get a very good and much more reliable Pajero for under $20K.

    Eg this: carsales.com.au

I have a line on an unreg d1 tdi300 auto down in north melbourne if you want me to have a closer look, the owner is selling it as surplus to business requirements so Im guessing it will be reasonably priced as he'll take a tax break on the onsale.
