Minor niggles to sort after Outback NSW trip

Having just completed a tour of petrol stations during a 5000km trip towing a TVan around NSW and back (to Gippsland), a couple of minor issues arose.
    1. The front axle seal that I had replaced with genuine part is still leaking. Can’t think what I did wrong but will try again.
    2. The shroud around the catalytic converter started rattling due to a cracked weld. Temporarily fixed with hose clamp.
    3. Rear door seal letting in dust even though fan was always on high with windows up on dirt roads. Seal appears to be in very good condition.

Other than this, we had no trouble at all. The D2 with air suspension really is a joy to tow with.
We really enjoyed the trip up the Darling River and had great weather for this time of year.
Although petrol consumption was quite high at ~25l/100km we didn’t need to carry the extra 40l that we did, but it was good to have for peace of mind.
Any comments/advise on my minor issues would be very welcome.
    Cheers all.

    1. It could be a worn shaft causing the issue, or it could be a worn bearing in the diff allowing the shaft to move around, damaging the seal and leaking, see if there is any freeplay.

    2. Get it welded up.

    3. Learn to enjoy dust, I've got several here and I cannot stop them leaking dust.
We were working on a mod but time got away.

It wouldn't be a D2, or D1 for that matter, if the back door didn't leak dust.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

I hope that you didn't have the air on recirculate.

    Hi Shack, thanks for response.
    1. This is what is so perplexing, I inspected the shaft for wear and found nothing untoward. I suppose it could be a bad bearing but haven’t noticed any other signs.
I sort of know what I’m looking at after 46 years in the metal trades working with valve stems, seals, packing etc. I guess I’ll buy another genuine seal and try again. I’ve noticed that others have had similar experiences.
    2. Yep
    3. Thought as much. I might get hold of a smoke machine and see if I can make some adjustments. The dust buildup wasn’t that bad.

Funny thing about the trip, we saw no other Discovery’s towing at all, but plenty of $160k Toyota’s, not to mention the vans. People must have lots of money to throw around. My $15k (in 2009) D2 handled the conditions with ease and comfort.Minor niggles to sort after Outback NSW trip

I found the LRA acrylic wind deflector good for keeping dust off the rear window/door of my D2s. Unfortunately LR discontinued the supply of these after only a short while.

Do you have a pic? We were thinking of a deflector of some sort ourselves.
