As for Nanocom, join the AULRO FB group, as they sometimes come up on there. Needs to be unlocked for D2 and TD5. They're not cheap but they are wort every $$$ when you need one. You can of course get new...

Don't forget to check the wiring loom for the transmission - it's prone to rubbing on the top of the transmission which can cause shorts and interesting problems...
I had a reply ready to go, acknowledging everyones suggestions but lost it. Not my day.
To sum up:
Shack: yes, I have a Nanocom and been all through it and No Faults Found.
sierrafey: Centre console indicators for all selections. So unlikely to be XYZ. I need to check the starter wiring and battery terminals.
Thanks for the XYZ explanation.
M&S lights on dashboard has not been working for a very long time but last time I tried the Mode Switch I could tell it was working.
A couple of years back when trying to find the cause of the various odd electrical faults I exchanged the BCU for another but the same faults remained. Apart from the M&S the fuel guage is totally erratic and the dash does not lights don't work. Sometimes windows open and shut when needed, sometimes they don't.
I need to get underneath and check wiring as suggested but I'm waiting for the gravel to dry out after last night's rain. I'm a whimp.
Appreciate your advice and time. Thanks people.
Don't waste time with the XYZ switch or it's circuit, it has nothing to do with your problem, first remove relay R2 and bridge the perpendicular cavities in the fusebox with a wire, if it cranks the starter circuit on that path is OK, if not there's the isssue somewhere, the spade connector on the solenoid used to get loose but if you hear a loudish click the solenoid is gone.

That would rule out the starter circuit only but the fact that you don't have indication on the dash LCD about the selection is part of the issue or just coincidental and keeps the BCU suspect, as you have nanocom go into BCU - Read inputs - Body 2 and se if you get the correct signals from the XYZ switch which should be OK as long as the console lamps are working then go to "outputs body" and test the "crank enable" to see what happens... not easy to diagnose your problem unless it's something more simple than it appears
PS... if no correct XYWZ inputs in the BCU check the "gear switch" inputs in the autobox ECU as well

I'm thinking that a failed XYZ switch will cause the BCU to prevent cranking as it doesn't detect it in park or neutral?
If I'm correct, you can set the BCU to manual gearbox and it will crank again.
I'm pretty sure that's correct, but please correct me if not!
I did a LOT of Diag getting the Auto to run standalone without defaulting, and that was one of the tests I did from memory.
But as above, please let me know if that's incorrect...
