DOUBLE DOUBLE WHEEL CARRIER - Doable?

Just musing here, was trolling the net and came across this - https://www.youtube.com/watch'time_c...OTExNywyODY2Ng

Not expecting much but it is one nice Defender. Then they showed a spare wheel carrier which is hinged at the rear door opeing and attached to the 'chassis' taking the wieght off the door itself. That said I have not heard of D2's suffering door hinge issues etc. but this gave rise to the thought that it would be possible to have a double spare carrier on the D2, which to date I do not think I have seen. It would also allow for the fitment of larger spares as well and not have undue extra effort to open the door

More so just love the simplicity of well thought out solutions.

You have now. Mine sagged to the point where it wouldn't close properly. One of the reasons I disabled the alarm. Shut fine with the spare removed. There's a thread here somewhere about fixing it.

My missus's d2 has the spare mounted to the rear bumper - she hates it, I hate it.
the rear door is bad too. I really miss the old S3 with the tyre on the bonnet.

My second spare will go on the roof.

The D2a I bought recently had a MCC dual spare wheel carrier Discovery 2 1999-2004 022-02 Rear Wheel Carrier Double Jerry Can Holde
    – MCC 4x4

Overkill for what I plan to do with the vehicle, plus you had to open both sides of it to open the rear door.
Sold it to a guy up the road who had three D2s and put the wheel back on the rear door. If I ever need to carry a second spare it would be on a roof rack.

I've replaced rear tall door hinges on both D2's that I have here due to wear and tear from the weight of the door and spare wheel.

Personally, I'd find it really annoying to have to move a wheel carrier out the way first, every time I want to open the rear door. A second spare wheel temporarily goes up onto my roof rack for those very rare occasions that I may need it.

At 70, with various spinal injuries in my past, I have zero desire to lift a 4WD wheel up onto my roof. The rear door is bad enough. Lucky the OKA has a winch. They're a little bigger...

I along with most I would think would hate putting a spare on the roof (I have RRT so it is an impossiblity anyway) but until I saw the MCC carrier had not seen a D2 with dual spares on the back. Certainly do not like having to swing two carriers out first to open a door (few mates and BIL have this arrangement), if that was the only solution for me, then it would take an extreme adventure requirement to do so.

But I think some of you may have missed the genius / GENIUS of the carrier shown, as it swivels from the same point as the door, the carrier opens with the door without putting load on the door hinges. The carrier is attached to the door by some means allowing it not swing out independently of the door itself during travel etc. The weight is carried by the chassis rail/s directly they state, which must be a bolt through the bar arrangement I would hazard a guess at.

Do see a problem though for a D2 with the video arrangement, how the hell would you open the back door as with Discofenders bar, where do you put the plates?

Went and found the company ORE, they are Defender only people but the site does show some better pics of how it works, of course this is only a single carrier and not a double.

Here's another link better showing fitment to the rear of the vehicle as well as components, so I'm sure the engineering ones amongst you could design one to suit the Disco2 providing you have a steel rear bar fitted https://youtu.be/ZBz4gH_B1KI

A solution for one spare wheel, supported by the bumper, moved by the door, is made by this guys: Land Rover Discovery D2 Modular Spare Wheel Arm
