TD5 cam timing . i must be missing something.

greetings folks. been awhile since i posted. ok here we go. replacing injector washers and o rings this weekend. noticed that locking nuts on rocker arms were loose on 3 cylinders. very strange !!! went ahead and backed off screws etc, noticed recess area on screws. removed cam shaft etc . removed / cleaned / fitted new genuine o rings and washers . refitted injectors. fitted cam shaft etc.
Then it all went tits up. t.d.c on 1 :- marks on chain lined up with sprocket. slot lined up with hole in top. rotate engine to get tdc on cylinder 1 using marks on sprocket. all going well !!!
no matter how often i adjust the screw the locknut always ends up in the cutout area of screw . recessed area with oil holes. unable to lock screw in place. locking pin holes on flywheel and cam sprocket correct.
all injectors fitted correctly. cam shaft fitted correctly. i'll be honest and admit i didnt spot the recesses when i last did the injectors several years ago. they must have caught enough thread to tighten up.
found 1 comment mentioning this problem using aulro search. but no answer.
local nuts and bolts shop tomorrow. get thicker nuts or several washers to be able to lock adjustment screw ??

    what am i missing ? pete. :-)

Hi Pete Are you saying the injector clearance adjuster screw is screwed in so far that the lock nut can't get enough purchase on the screw ( lack of thread on screw) ?

So you are turning the engine so that the cam lobe has pushed the injector plunger down as far as it will go, then screw clockwise until it stops, then back off 1 turn?.

This is opposite to the way valve clearances are done, which may be where the confusion is.

I am also assuming you are referring to the rocker shaft and not the camshaft, which requires the removal of all head bolts and cam carrier.

Edit: you will need to back off all the injector adjustment screws until they are t least 3/4 of the way out, then do the clearances again. if they are screwed in too far so there is no clearance for the plunger then damage will result, if it hasn't already

To time cam place timing pin in flywheel. then rotate cam until a timing pin can be dropped into recess in camshaft. Tighten bolts on sprocket.
The sprocket or cam has the numbers of cylinders to be set for injector clearance on the back of the front sprocket carrier. ( i never found them but I believe they are there.)

    What am i missing ? A BRAIN.
walked outside with a cup of coffee at 6.30 a.m. stood in front of car and mentally went through what i had been doing day before. !!!!
    Bingo !!!
first :- apologies to all. tital should have been "Injector timing" for the heading.
2nd :- sorry to all again. i knew i was doing something wrong. didn't know what . by time i posted to aulro i was very frustrated and confusing valve timing and injector timing.
i'll see if i can explain my screw up.
cylinder 1. with the cam in the correct position, the rocker arm for injector plunger is at its highest point. this means that the plunger should be fully depressed . to set clearance screw in adjustment screw clockwise until plunger bottoms out , then rotate 1 complete turn anti clockwise to set clearance and lock adjustment screw in place.

For some strange reason i was trying to set the plunger clearance with plunger closed as if it was a valve. i.e. screw down adj screw until touching plunger then back of 1 turn.
i was trying to set adjustment with plunger closed when it should have been fully open.

Please insert swear words of your choice. i've decided i'm going senile :-)) What an absolut D........head.
On the plus side , its only my pride. if it gives folks a smile or laugh all good.

    pete :-)
