I think that you need to go genuine with both the gasket and the isolaters.

Even with genuine it's not a great setup.

Recently I've been using aviation form-a-gasket, painted both sides and fitted it. I wouldn't use any kind of RTV, at best you make a mess outside, and a terrible mess inside for the next guy to get off (usually you again).

The aviation stuff makes a mess, wear rubber gloves ... But you can clean up the outside of the engine when you finish with isopropyl alcohol, methylated spirits or even turps.

I really should redesign it... In my spare time.

I used genuine, it leaks at the rear. Funny that the VW golf, VW tiguan Mercedes Valente doesn't leak. Land Rover must use **** rubbers and/or a poor design. Thinking a bout it, a lip that sextends below the gasket line on the inside would reduce the amount of oil getting to the gasket. A raised section down the middle on the lower casting would also help.

I think my first move would be to put the top of the cam carrier and the bottom of the rocker cover on a head planing machine....

Mine only leaks at the rear, I'm not sure a super flat surface would help. I mean to say old chap, the rubber is there to account for the waviness of these surfaces. (Good grief I can see the engineers saying that!)

No doubt you are aware that there are 2 different seals depending on the head version?

The only difference is the size of the "D" at the back.

Oh yes. Didn't know what the difference was.

If the "D" isn't tight, you've got the wrong one!

BTW, I have seen a 10p head with the 15p gasket needed, I'm not sure if the cam carrier was replaced or if it was like that from the factory.

You definitely need the dedicated gasket for the engine ERR7094 for 10P or LVP000020 for 15+P, some sealant is needed for 10P but not for 15 and check that drain hole(B in the pic) to be free cos that's one reason for leaks there, i used sealant once when i knew too little about Td5s(not anymore) and it leaked there while that hole was clogged then after i cleaned it was leakless for ages.
