Previous operator wasted hundred of dollars on copious amounts of a couple of different RTVs. From the amount of oil covering the area, only conclusion was that it was a wasted effort. horrible job trying to get it all out of the nooks and crannys too.
The aviation type? As well as the rubber (sieve) gasket?

Yeah, Permatex. white-ish/grey bottle, lid had built in brush.

White TD5(D2) we've had since 2017. In 2017 we did the injector seals. Loom and new gasket, but not new washer/rubbers for the bolts. That one is 7 years and no leaks.

(new) Silver TD5(D2a) ... a previous attempt using two different coloured RTV had the rocker cover leaking. It's tedious getting it all out of the nooks and crannys. Again I used form-a-gasket. I think I use it primarily to keep it in place correctly when offering up the rocker cover. It says in the 'destructions' that you have to let it dry a bit before you offer up surfaces/gaskets/etc.

I also had a leak on the difflock mechanism side cover on the T/C on the D2a. What a pain to get that off. again, heaps of RTV that didn't seal, and annoyingly the leak was from the topside of the side cover, so it looked like intermediate shaft leak in some ways. Good clean up tho showed, inter'shaft was dry, but side cover leaking. No gasket for that one, so form-a-gasket again.

Did you use both the forma gasket and the rubber gasket?

yep. the forma a gasket was more so to keep the gasket in place whilst cover goes on.
IIRC the narrow section just behind the cam sprocket/chain can move when placing the cover on.

Can't remember if I did the rubber gasket on the cover or on the head last week, but have done both ways.
