Very Loud Hum Driver's Side Engine bay

Any ideas what an intermittent very loud hum on the driver's side of the motor (TD5) be? Maybe some vibration as well?
Can be easily heard over the idling motor and often while driving.
It sounds like it could be in the vicinity of the alternator

    alternator bearings?
Don't worry it will get worse.
When you can hear it get a large screwdriver and place carefully on where bearings are with your ear on the top of the screwdriver..
I just had a thought. It is most likely to be either the belt tensioner or the bearing in the timing cover that holds the viscous fan.
    What is the bet?
    Regards PhilipA

Thanks, I think it must be the alternator by elimination. I will try the screwdriver thing.
Tensioner and timing cover bearing replaced in the last few years (it doesn't get driven much). They had a distinct grinding rumbling sound.
This is more of a strange electrical sounding hum - like those electrical transformer boxes on the ground that you see around suburbs.

Check the egr vacum solenoid - drivers side inner guard and has vac lines in and out. Mine used to start making a terrible racket, just like you describe, anytime we hit corrugations. In my case it had not been correctly bypassed when previous owner did egr delete.

Drop the belt and check it and the pulleys, if all ok, start the car ( briefly ) and see if the noise is still there.
