    TD5 OBD compatibility?

So far as we are mostly aware, TD5 landrovers are not OBD compliant, yet I bought myself a super duper(for me, a non mechanic type) a Autel BK906Pro tablet based device.

I'd looked deeply into the device and I bought it(a few years ago now) primarily to service my fathers 2004 307Hdi Pug. Which I have to say it basically did not!
Turns out that we in Aus got different ECUs on those vehicles compared to most of the rest of the world, and all my searching was UK based, where they did get compatible ECU configs, so the BK906Pro works on the 307Hdi in UK ... not so in Aus.
They got Seimens ECUs, we got Bosch ECUs, and the 2004 model era 307s used VAN, not CAN system ... anyhow. couldn't use it on the 307 ... so big waste of a K of hard earned!

Recently I also got a 3008Hdi, and it works pretty mush perfectly on this model tho. (for the 307 I had to get dedicated Pug software and cables and stuff, and got it working now)

anyhow, this is the back story of why I have this Autel device.

more than 2 years later .. I never thought that it could work with the D2 TD5 .. and really why would it?
Well I can say with 100% surety that it does.
Very much limited compared to the nanocom, for sure, and as you'd kind of expect, but a lot of key electrocommunicatable stuff is possible.
Haven't been through them all, and some weird stuff, but most systems are recognised.

I quickly checked some stuff, like injectors(codes, and test firing) checked ABS some stuff works, some doesn't.
Injectors and trouble codes worked fine, and compared to nanocom just fine. test fired etc.
All the limited tests I did was also compared to nanocom too.

Auto trans was a bit weird. Switching through the shift lever showed strangeness. when in park, it said non valid data, same with reverse, but then into D and it showed park! .. and other weirdoness like that.

ABS worked fine on the whole, allowed brake bleed, but then logging, it showed both fronts, but not rears(as in any data) .. so kind'a useless .. unless I have a problem. I didn't check with nanocom on that to compare tho.

But other stuff like EKA display and change is there, same with key coding, coding the suspension plip is also available ... blah blah.

Got to scoot off to appointment now, so can't do all tests.

Have to get a spare key for D2a soon, and will be interesting to see how well it can do the key coding too.
Also have to catch up with nephew to see if it can also do SLS checks and adjustments too. He has nanocom, but just for the sake of seeing just how much this Autel can do.

also trouble code info was spot on, too .. both Autel and nanocom both showed two temp codes(missing speed info something-or-other).

just a quick heads up for those of us who like self diagnosing stuff on our cars.

Keep us posted. Autel make good stuff so if it has even 75% of the functionality of the Nanocom it’s probably worth it.
$1K? My local shop just bought a new one for $13K. Still, it’s far more comprehensive and has a lot of service data included. But it’s fun watching him try to figure it out 😂. He’s always been a LR and OKA guy but he’s getting so much more late model stuff, especially Euro, so it’s probably a vital bit of kit I am now going to ask him how it goes with D2s and P38s.

Too hot up here at the moment.
I mean can do some checks now, but I'll probably melt in doing so.

For me, I generally don't mind spending money (I can afford) to get stuff done.

I think I've mentioned before, I hate todays' car designs, where a simple fix turns out to be stupidly complicated for no good reason ... where older gen cars are more than happy to work without such stupid complexity with respect to repairs.

What I mean by this is, fuel regulators/sensors, batteries etc ... all simple stuff to replace, once you know their stuffed.

In the 307 we had a problem with the fuel pressure sensor, it was going out of range, and causing shut down. It was only in more demanding power needs,, but cruising along gently and backing off up hills it chugged along. Had to rescue the brother from Wang area, and I nursed it home ok.

figured out it was just the sensor, $60 later I felt confident that it was sorted, went for a quick mad dash up the freeway ... splutter, splutter and silence. shut down. Reset fault, nursed back home.
Jump on the net and found out that I had to go into the repair menu(in the PSA software) and tell the ECUs that the fuel pressure sensor was renewed!!

    WHY!!??
If it knew it was faulty, surely an ECU should be smart enough to know it was now back in range! ... making cars smarter has surely dumbed them considerably.

Haven't had to deal with the issue yet, but have been reading up heaps on the 3008 in the past year, and find bits of info like this. So the Autel will eventually 'pay for itself' for simple things like a battery change.

Another question is going to be, at what model level do Autel have support for a TD5? Some of their just a bit lower spec tools have quite a few features ... it'll be interesting to know.

Oh! I said in the my first post the Autel is a BK906 .. blah blah .. it's MK906Pro ... damn thing was in my hand when I typed up my initial post! ... see it's so hot my brain melted in real time.
... wonder if the autel can scan it and report back?

Not going to ask which port you would use...

One of the tasks the Autel was put to at this shop was to sort out the BCU on a BT50. Not sure if it was the Ranger based one or the Isuzu. Woman had been given some LED headlights for Chrissy. Fitted them. No low beam. Shop refitted the original globes. No low beam. The BCU had turned them off, but was to stupid or pig headed to turn them back on. Seems there's a module you need to fit....
