But nephew did recently on his 7seater.
He didn't remove side panels.
Only time we removed his seats was to try to fit up an old platform box I had for my TD5, he wanted it to go on a trip.
But he changing his fuel pump(a few times), one time he came up to me just to fit a new sealing ring. His interior was intact.
So carpet can be slid under the side panels. Maybe not end up perfect, and maybe 'not so easy' compared to having rear trim out, but I'm sure it's doable that way too.
I've removed the side covers a few times only on the TD5, primarily to shut down the squeaks and rattles.
They can be a bit of a pain to remove/refit.

He must have a stubborn streak. I got my carpet out, with some swearing and struggle, but I couldn't get it back in. Not a chance. Obviously worth a try though.
Squeaks and rattles? I just take my hearing aids out. Pretty sure the original owner ticked the S&R box on the options list.
