    Brake Master Cyl Leaking

I have just discovered my brake master cyl leaking. It looks like it is between the plastic reservoir and the steel cyl.

Some research suggests this is a common problem. I have 3 options.

1/ Replace just the rubber seals which I can get for $37

2/ Replace seals and plastic reservoir. $136 from UK

3/ I can get a complete master cyl from the USA for about $180.

My choice would be the $37 dollar option providing the old plastic doesn't break doing the job.

    Anyone had experience doing this?
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Not on a D2, but I have done it. You are correct that care is needed, but they aren't subject to stuff like UV so it should be ok. I have a spare one here I could practice on. I would try to get it warm before doing it.

I did it successfully on my D1, Dave. Probably the easiest job I've ever done on a Land Rover.

    Thanks Ian and John.

$37 option looks like the go.

Very weirdly ... on the D2 when I got it from brother, it had the same leak.

I have a spares D2 and had the idea to change it out spares one.

This was a few years ago now, but from some inexplicable reason the leak just stopped!!
Obvious reason was maybe low on fluid, and I use a very light coloured Bosch fluid, so not easy to see through the reservoir, but nope. it was at the correct level.

I've done two pad changes in the time I've had the D2, and each time I've done a flush and nanocom bleed.
Maybe the new fluid stopped the leak???

Maybe it was the remnants of a previous overflow, Arthur.

I might take the brake fluid out and put gear oil in. If it doesn't fix the leak, it will at least slow it down until the parts arrive.

Or, alternatively, it won't slow down at all....

That's funny and interesting as gear oil is mineral based, so might degrade the rubber hoses and seals, whereas brake fluid is glycol based, not vegetable oil based like I thought, although it used to be. I'm not sure if antifreeze would be a better substitute.
