    V8 to TD5, worth doing?

    Morning Brains trust,

Bit of bench racing/brain storming question.

Not too far away from me is a D2a V8 with a dead motor (heads or something) it's in very good condition, basically a Mums Taxi, body is very straight, interior is in very good condition (not leather) So my thinking, if not obvious from the title, I have a TD5 doner that is mechanically good but body/interior not so much (2001 D2)

I'm also thinking that the V8 auto might be a ZF4hp24 (2003 model, would this be correct??) I have an Ashcroft TD5 to V8 adaptor plate already.

So the grand plan would be to change from the V8 petrol to TD5 with a better torque convertor and possibly a better transmission or at least one with about 150,000km less on it.

I know I'll have to source another ECU (NNN) and get the ignition/keys sorted (maybe??) welding/changing engine mounts isn't a problem either (welder by trade)

Am I missing anything here? good idea or just a massive waste of time??

    Thoughts/input would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers

If you have both types side by side it all can be interchanged.

but Id suggest that unless the rust is bad in the TD5 converting it to auto and changing the internal dressing over might be easier than doing the engine change.

Fairly sure the engine mounts are different between td5/V8's. With the possibility of it being a ph24 those I believe were more of a thing behind the 4.6's.

No HP24's from factory in the Australian version D2, only in the 4.6 P38 Rangie

The 22 in it would also have to be disassembled ( along with the one in the TD5 ) in order to swap the output shafts and extension housing.

Complete fuel tank with pump, filter housing and lines, exhaust, radiator, wiring looms, ECU, TCU, etc.

It'd have to be a mint fully optioned number to be worth it for me.

    Just to add to this.

There was some misinformation on this forum many years ago stating that the V8 D2 came factory fitted with the 24.

I even believed this to be the case.

But as Discorevy said, none are like that in AU.

The only ones I know of for sure that have it were basically the last release D2s in the U.S. fitted with the 4.6.

4HP22 for the D2, but since you'll have it out its worth upgrading the front end with the 24 bits. espesically if you're going to massage the engine and fit a beefy torque converter oh, add a secondary cooler too.

Thanks for the information everyone, especially Discorevy and Shack,

Standing back and reassessing things, really my best option is to forget the V8 (it's nothing special, just good condition) my doner has plenty of the good bits that my daily doesn't (dash, hood lining and all the little bits and pieces but no driveline as the auto went into my sons D2) but my auto is definitely on the way out (high stall speed, doesn't always drop into top gear or lockup correctly) now looking in the for sale section, I see Discorevy has an auto for sale with the V8 convertor at a very good price, just need to sort the piggy bank and work out a time to swap it out.

    cheers
