    If the belt runs under the pulley, then it's right hand thread
    Over the top of the pulley, left hand thread.

    for 99% of vehicles anyway.

    It's opposite if the engine rotates unconventionally.

    Haha ... yeah.
    Owning both Tdi and TD5(and a V8) this one always caught me out too.

    Either I'd get used to either the Tdi or Td5 'handedness' and then initially do it wrong on the Td5 or Tdi ... especially when doing it up ... and I'd be , "go ON you stupid thing!!" ... and then realise my stupidity.

    On that, similar vein, I was working at my job at a Datsun ( that'll age it ) workshop when my sister and mum appeared. They had a flat tyre at the local mall thing. Bloke had tried to help but couldn't get the wheel off. I nearly couldn't either, he'd got it so tight. Bloody Valiants.

    I got caught out on an old Snoopy MAN, that'll date that.
    Could not loosen the front left. Some clown had relined the brakes, undoing the stub axle nut to remove the hub and drum complete. On reassembly the wheels were mounted on opposite sides.

    A freind went on trip to America and said when driving over there he used the old " right tighty, lefty loosey" when turning corners, so that he'd be on the correct side of the road.
