    2003 TD5 cranks but won’t start

Hi all, troubles with the 2003 TD5 disco 2.

    - Engine turned on, shut off almost instantly
    - Engine cranks, won’t turn over.
    - have started the fuel pump priming aprox 3 times
    - can hear the fuel pump doing its thing when priming is activated
    - the RPM tach doesn’t move when starting the fuel priming (5 steps on accelerator)
    - I parked the car on a slight nose down angle when it had roughly a quarter of diesel. Put an extra 20ltrs in, restarted fuel purge cycle again - still won’t turn over.

I don’t have a nanocom scanner so going in blind here at the moment. Signs point towards Crankshaft Position Sensor?

Any help would be appreciated. Cheers

Could be CKP, but don't let tunnel vision lead you down the wrong path(unless you like to spend money needlessly).

Seems to be the season for crank-no starts recently.
A few threads in the D2 forum by a couple members, turned out to be either ECU or BCU 'errors' in some way.

But for that you will need a nanocom to clear the problem.

Also, be specific with your terminology. Your title says crank-no start, then you mention "won't turn over".
Usually this means will no crank .. ie. dead starter type situation.
Engine won't run is different to won't turn over.

You haven't mentioned if the red led middle lower part of the dash is flashing or not too. My guess is not flashing .. ie. immobilised .. I think if immobilised, then pump doesn't run either.
Have you checked the state of the battery, and not only how many volts it's holding, that's not a true measure of health of a battery. When you crank the thing, and battery hasn't got a lot of cranking amps, it can drop severely ... my D2 gets as low as voltage in the 8 range. My D2a always holds high 10 to 11 volt range.

As before, check the D2 forum, there is one, maybe two long threads on the same issue about Jan or so ... so very recent.
Couple or more members had trouble, and I kind of replicated the situation with my D2a, and recovered it using some settings changes on the nanocom .. I distinctly remember it started, shut off after 1 sec of running, then crank-no start. CKP(crank sensor) was fine .. and D2a still starts and runs perfectly ... so back to the tunnel vision problem ... don't get caught in that trap. And to be clear... I'm not saying the CKP isn't dud ... with the recent other cases of C-N/S, I think they all turned out to be battery related and or ECU misfortune. If the ECU doesn't get good enough voltage at some point, it can become convoluted in some way, where nanocom can restore it.

Also, if you mention which area you are at, I know your profile says brisbane ... but more specific like east/west/etc ... maybe a helpful member can assist with nanocom.
    Arthur.

I had a similar situation after mine was parked for 2 weeks. Started, spluttered and stopped immediately, after doing the fuel pump purge (I had less than 1/4 tank) about 10-15 times it finally picked up, ran rough for about a minute and then sweet as. After I filled up and drove home (320km) I pulled the fuel filer housing and cleaned the little gauze thing and replaced the non-return duck bill, since then (15,000km) no issues at all, also starts a lot better so I think it was slowly causing issues

    Hope this helps

    cheers

Maybe totally unrelated. My TD5 had it's first trip on a towtruck recently. It just stopped while driving. Would crank but never fired again. Turned out to be an ECU failure. The symptom that i didn't recognise at the time.. my td5 spy wouldn't fire.

I would also be checking the ecu power relays, and red plug for oil.

Have you checked for oil at the ecm connectors? If oil has migrated from the head then removing the seals from the connectors at the ecu then washing the connectors in metho usually gets the engine running. Note that the crankshaft position sensor signal can be corrupted by the oil from the injector loom.
