    Some D2 winch questions

    Pretty straight forward.

    I want to put a winch on the D2 (03MY Td5)

What winches will fit into an ARB Sahara bar on a D2?
I'd like to get a 9.5XP but ARB will just tell me that it will only take the M8000 & XD9000. Reading from their parts book as that's all that is listed for the D2.
If you can recommend another winch I'm open to suggestions. Just don't like the XD9000 and the M8000 is not big enough.

Has anyone had any luck trying to mount the winch's control box under the bonnet? Can't think of anywhere to put it, but no harm in asking.

I'm going to upgrade my suspension from the present OME - partially for the winch. Shocks will be Bilstein or Koni. What's a good suggestion for springs at the front?

Anyway that's my quota of dumb questions for tonight. Hope you folks can give me some answers!

    Hi dm,
Hope all is well up North,

I too would of liked the 9500 to fit but the size is just too big, the motor end just doesnt fit..

I ended up going for the copy of an iron man 9500, its ok & has suited me for what i need. Its just a chinese copy but does well.

But i have also see the Ox 10,000 fitted into a Sahara bar as well.
So there are options it just depends on preference.

I mounted my control box on the Bar above the winch, just just neater & not to complex.

Springs is a whole new ballgame & something i will be doing end of year.

See Franz also (on d2au), his setup is very nice & rides very well.
I think hehas also just changed to Bilsteins..would need to confirm.

    Cheers Mate

Thanks Pete, I'll contact Franz too. Hadn't thought of the Ox winches. I'm not a big fan of the Chinese winches as everything I read suggests that most get hot quickly. I think that would be more of a problem up here.

Other than that everythings going well up this end of the world. Wet seasons still here, so there's soft mud and hard sand

I have no idea if my TJM bar is anything like your ARB, but the control box for my xd9000 is mounted behind/inside the bar out of sight.

    DM,

I have a Warn XD9000 in a TJM bar and it's good enough for the occasional recoveries that I use it for. The controller sits above the winch but under the top plate of the bar so it's pretty much out of sight.

Suspension can be done in two ways - off the shelf or design your own. If you go to ARB, they'll give you 225lb springs for the front that will stop any bottoming out - but, they are quite hard. I am about to get 180lb springs that are comensurately longer than the 225 lb equivalents and will have a nice soft ride and good articulation/lift. Downside being that it wallows more in the corners.

Upside of designing your own springs is that it's cheaper - 4 springs will cost around 300 Oxford Scholars. I recently fitted Bilsteins and they are VASTLY superior to OME shocks (and longer)

    Hey Franz

Post a thread when you get your springs sorted. I have been thinking of swapping out my OME's for custom jobbies as they are hard. I have the heaviest springs available.

    Sorry to hijack the thread...

Thanks Franz, hadn't got around to D2AU message to you, so that solves that.

Do the Bilstiens give you the same travel as the OME's (ie OK with about a 35mm suspension height increase) or is it more or less? Do you have the part numbers of the shocks?

I don't mind the harsher ride, do a lot of corrugated roads and bush tracks so less wallowing is good. I'll give ARB a call I think and see what they say with their heavier springs, I thought the 225lb was their standard front springs for a diesel.

My preference for something other than the XD9000 is based on previous experience with one on a D1. Basically I kept drowning the blasted thing cause it sat to low down. I'd also much rather the 9.5XP motor and gearing, but I don't think it will fit (need to get the ruller out).
