    Disco II :ABS/Traction disabled with CDL

    1999 D2 7 seat TD5 Auto. I was wondering if anyone knows how to enable the ABS and Traction control when you engage the CDL on a DII. I recently installed a cable actuator for the CDL but if it is engaged and you restart the motor you loose ABS and Traction control.

    There is a speel about cutting the Black/Blue wire on the 9 pin of the second ECU under the glove box. The only Black/Blue wire was on the 8 pin and cutting it did nothing as far as I could see so I have joined it back.

    Any experience out there?

    For a re-instated CDL, the intel I have from this forum is that the CDL should be engaged after the ignition is turned ON and subsequently disengaged before the ignition is turned OFF. Any other sequence will de-activate your ABS,TC,HDC. Try it.

    If you want to be able to engage at any time (when the car is off, or after not disengaging it prior to switching the car off and just restaring ...I'm lost now ...) that is when you need to cut the wire thingy.

    I'm pretty sure that if you have the engine running, engage the CDL, then everything works, however if you engage while the engine's off ( or turn the car off with CDL in ), then TC is disengaged, ABS works all the time regardless....well that's how it's been explained to me anyway..

    with mine which is 04 & therefore has cdl factory fitted.....the mapping for the traction control seems to change when cdl is in .

    does anyone know what exactly happens'may be it is the same as the defender mapping

    the tc is definitely less sensitive with cdl in...dont know about whether the abs also changes.

    i hate the abs on dirt rds it just wont stoooooooop

    I tried engaging it while the engine is running and that works fine so thanks but would be nice to be able to leave the CDL in during an expedition and not have to worry about it. Just a pity that cutting the wire did not work for me.

    Of course it changes Your front and rear axles are now locked together so less forward/backward axle speed variation.

    Dont know how others drive on dirt, but I'm not gentle, often drifting into/out of corners...

    Never had an issue with ABS...

    Just push the damn pedal Now, is it pulsing? Push HARDER

    I've never been unhappy with braking on the dirt with ABS... And at least as its braking I dont induce spin or slide with locked tyres...

    Note: I've never had to hard brake in a straight line, always been mid corner surprises that require the anchor! If your truly going hard enough that your overshooting etc, then I suggest revising driving on dirt / loose surfaces.

    And a bush tip, at night, slow down... Avg Bush speed in northern SA is around 80km/h after dark.

    on a dirt rd in a straight line my brothers d1(no abs) stops a lot quicker than my d2.sure mine is slightly heavier, but once his wheels lock up & dig in pulls up well, while the d2 chatters past.

    now, on a corner, or trying to swerve &brake at the same time the chattering abs is a lot safer

    This is from the Ashcrofts Transmissions web page for CDL installation in the DII

    To finish off the job...

    1) Disconnect the battery. Unscrew the four hex screws in the glove box hinges. Reach round the side of the glove box with each hand and pull the closing mechanism upwards. Slide the glove box out

    2) Pull out the 3 push-studs on the black cardboard panel underneath the glovebox, and undo the screw stud at the back. Remove the panel.

    3) Near the outer side of the gap behind the glove box, you will see 2 or 3 ECUs, depending on whether you have ACE, I think. The SLABS ECU is the centre of the three, or the outside of the two. It has 5 black connector blocks underneath. Remove the centre block of the five from underneath the ECU.

    4) Look for the black & blue wire running to pin 9 of the connector block, which is the central pin on the lower row, i.e. the row furthest from the retaining clips. At this point, make sure you have the right connector, and the right pin!

    5) Cut this black & blue wire & tape off the ends. (Give enough space to solder it back together if you find out you have cut the wrong one...) Reconnect the connector. Replace the panel and the glovebox. Reconnect the battery.

    Please note :

    This is not needed for 2003 on (facelift) models as the ECU has been reprogrammed to take care of NOT disabling traction control/ABS when CDL in engaged, when ignition is switched on.

    To test: engage the CDL and start the car up. The CDL light should be lit, but the ABS/TC lights should not be lit up. This is correct - it means that the SLABS ECU is not disabling ABS/TC when you start the car up with the diff lock engaged

    Bingo !

    Just goes to show how some good instruction make the difference. Will try and include a photo incase there are other D2 modifiers out there wondering if they have the balls to cut wires to their own ECUs. It shows the blue black wire cut in relation to the bonnet lever. It works just like one off the shelf. I will crimp some bullet ends incase for some reason I want to join it back later./Users/John/Desktop/DSCF3086.jpg
