I know there's a v8 in there somewhere - just can't hear it!

Well i got a bit of a suprise today (becoming par for the course with this car it seems) when i had it checked over for the rwc. Turns out it has "non-standard extractors and cats" fitted at the moment which would apparently need to be fully checked out to ensure they comply.

Not quite sure why the previous owner would have had extractors etc done without replacing the rear muffler too. Just hope they are allowable for the rwc as it turns out there are a good few other things i need to sort out too, so could do without having to replace these back to standard.

Still on the plus side it means i should get the maximum benefit from a 2.5/3" cat back system when i get it through the rwc.

Keep an eye or should I say ear out for my silver D1 around sth melb / albert park if you want to hear how good a disco can sound. You might have seen or heard it already. :twisted:

Nice, that sounds the business - how is it on the freeway etc, much drone or is it quiet unless you blat it?

Just got my D2 manual back from getting an X-Force High Performance centre muffler fitted.

First impressions - it gives a deeper, louder note at idle - sounds really good- and maybe it's just my imagination (probably) but take-off seems more crisp - it doesn't seem to bog down as it used to.

As you rev it there is a slight booming under load at abt 2200rpm, not intrusive though.

When you rev it doesn't sound that noisier than standard from the driver's seat.

I asked about free-flowing cats and extractors, there are a few manufacturers for the extractors (Genie and others I can't remember) and cats are about $300 a side. The bloke at the exhaust shop said that the exhaust back from the muffler really did not need to be changed - it's mandrel bent stainless which he thought was pretty good as it was. He suggested just extractors and free-flow cats.

He also showed me the gas leaking from the seam of the std muffler. He said it wasn't too bad but indicated it was beginning to deteriorate. I now have a reason for replacing it if the Minister of Finance calls for an enquiry...

I am going to get a recording from the back of the car while taking off (I think you get a better idea of the sound it makes under load, not just revving at idle) once I can figure out how to attach my camera to the back without it falling off (!)

Sounds probably like the same thing the previous owner of mine went for, extractors and cats but nothing further back.

Will likely drop into a place i know nearby who are happy to do some custom building/swapping of components to get to a noise level I am happy with when i get it through the rwc rather than trying to get an off the shelf system.

2.5" pipe from y-pipe back, magnaflow centre, small hotdog resonator at the back. If I ever get the engine warmed over or replaced I'll put in extractors too.

Its loud outside or with the windows down. SWMBO was complaining about the noise so I lined the rear door, rear floor and walls with dynamat. This was a big improvement. You know you are driving a V8 but its not intrusive until you give it a boot full. Under load at 3k rpm it sounds :twisted::twisted::twisted:.

Its given me a little more torque and it tends to rev more freely. It will pull up long hills in low 3 that would have been low 2 with the old stock system.

V8Landy, you were so right. This has transformed the car. Have taken it for a few drives now and it is bloody awsome. Just sounds perfect.

If I was going to be really picky, you do notice a slight booming in 5th on 100km/h, but that's it. More than worth living with, for such a great sound.

The catalytic converters really kill the "pulse" of the V8 on the DII, which is why it will never sound as good as a "cat less" DI V8.

I've gone through the full cycle. First I removed the rear resonator and replaced the center muffler with a Magnaflo (straight thru). Sounded very bad ass but the drone was unbearable.

Then I refitted the factory resonator and lived like that for 3 years. I finally couldn't handle all that noise and refitted the original middle muffler, and she's quiet again. Yippie!

The Land Rover exhaust system is pretty good and I've not experienced any fuel economy gains for the extra noise that the Magnaflow created.

If you want a good V8 sound but no drone fit a Flowmaster centre muffler as I have on my 3.9 RRC.

A Flowmaster gives a nice "mouse" beat at low revs but no drone.
It is a lightly baffled muffler .
I also have a dogleg oval straight through resonator on the back, as SWMBO objected to the hotdog.

My D1 V8 has standard manifolds with a 2.5in system with a muffler and resonator. Don't know details as they were fitted before I got the car.

The office I am working in now says it vibrates the windows (3rd floor) when I start it and idle out of the carpark :D
However it is quiet as a mouse compared to a RRC in our club. I don't know what his setup is.

Mine doesn't drone but it can be annoying to have it idling while standing behind it talking etc
