I pulled it out because I need to rebuild the TD5. I have another thread on that http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...-pressure.html

However after resealing the TC a while ago there was more slop in it. I didn't replace the shims or thrust washers when I resealed it and figured i'd made a mistake.

The day I decided not to drive it any longer it did begin to make noise. Between about 60km/h and 30km/h but only during deceleration. I put this down to the transfer case, however as the TC never made a noise before that day perhaps it was the DC joint in the front prop shaft. Lets hope it is not a diff or the auto, that's the last thing I need.

I'm guessing that's a record judging by this thread. I know it is the original one too.
I was smugly thinking that I was doing well to get to 480,000 kms with the original drive shaft, despite pushing more torque through the drive train, but today I noticed the tell tale signs of pending failure as starting to make a chirping noise under certain conditions. The chirping is hardly noticeable over the engine noise, but know that I am listening for it I can just pick it up.

Thought I'd show you some pictures.
There were no needle bearings in 2 ends in one of the uni's.

An update for those interested. Vehicle D2 V8 with 2" lift kit.
When we first got the car found one of the unis worn half through.
Replaced all with Hardie Spicer HD Greasable Unis and a new ball.
Just before our trip to Bathurst ball failed, had wear and popped out of the race. Uni joints still fine. Around 10,000kms maybe less.
Coming home yesterday and it has become apparent the ball has failed again. 120,000kms travelled on this trip.
Seems there are major issues with the ball wearing, not a Hardie Spicer issue I dont think, but the poor design of the front prop shaft.
Will be checking out a Hardie Spicer HD shaft or Cardan Joint.
Pretty much unacceptable having to do this every 10,000kms
