This will sound like a dumb question so please excuse me but are you pressing the HDC button once you have gone into low range or is this button permnanently pressed in? Does it chime once you have selcted low range and then pressed the HDC button?
Hi all – I have an 01 build series II Disco Man V8. I noticed the other day that the HDC light kept flashing green despite sticking her in low range – it didn’t seem to know that it was in low range. I have never had this before and so went off road like that and in addition to hill decent light chiming away and not activating the brakes, the traction control was sluggish. Normally in low range the program was much more aggressive (as per the manual or RAVE cant remember which) and in practice it was very aggressive in low range off road. So it seems that the computer is not aware that the transfer case is in low. Tried going in and out about 20 times but no change. Got underneath and pulled the clips apart and sprayed the connectors in the wires for the low range switch- with contact cleaner – stuck them back together and it worked fine then. 2 days later, same problem. So I wonder what it is and whether it’s the switch itself ($208). Traction control still works but nowhere near as well and the ABS works fine.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. This has lead me to price a good place doing a CDL install (front output housing), lever, and getting this problem fixed at the same time ($2,000 all up including shifter) and fixing the central shaft oil leak at the same time. Having said that I don’t want to spend the dosh, so if I can fix the low range identification problem that would be sweet.
Cheers and thanks

No dumb questions I reckon matey. If you press it in high range it will chime its head off and HDC wont work, if you then select low range it should and normally did stop flashing and HDC works and the green HDC light stays illuminated. Of you can select low range and then press it, it doesnt matter, and when its all working and you then change out of low to high it will chime until you turn it off by pressing the button.
Cheers
I'm a bit confused too, i was under the impression that once you de-activate HDC (ie) go to high OR use the foot brake, you needed to press the button again to re-activate HDC.

Not in mine. If the button is pressed in High it will chime and flash away. If you shift to low with no change the light stays green - not flashing - and no chime. If you then shift back to high it will chime and flash...and so on it goes. I have had the Disco since new in 2002 and I have used it offroad often using the HDC and ETC. This is the first time it has had this problem. I use the HDC at home on my steep driveway every 1-2 months if I have not been offroad and it activates the ABS modulator to stir up the fluid and activate the shuttle valves - that combined with brake fluid changes using test book to get the fluid right through the modulator I reckon have stood me in good stead with good working tractions control and no amigos or shuttle valve errors since replacment of the ABS mod unit at 60,000k - now done 126,000k.

In another thread (CDL Electrics on Disco II for Diff-Lock Lamp) a member was swapping an 04 transfer case into his series II that had no cdl internals. He mentioned that it had 2 switches off the transfer case. One must be to let the ABS side of things know that the box in is low range for the Hill Decent and aggressive traction control in low range and the other must be to illuminate the diff lock lamp on the instrument cluster...why wouldnt they just use one switch to do both if Im right about what they are for?
Hi,
The reason there is 2 switches, is because you may change from high to low (SLABS ECU needs to know this) for what ever reason, but you may not want the diff lock in,or you may not even have one !!, and vice versa so its not possible for one switch to do both jobs. In fact the 03 on model year has 2 difflock switches and a high low switch.
If when you cleaned the High / Low switch it was ok, then its likely thats on the way out imo. Theres a simple way to check it out, simply disconnect the 2 wires from the high low switch, and run a couple of wires with spade terminals on into the cabin tempararily, and just connect them to a toggle switch of any sort, then just see what happens then when you select it. Go to a hill and select low, switch the toggle switch so the box thinks its in low then use your HDC. If it all works as normal, then the switch is buggered.
Thanks matey - thats a great idea. And a sneaky way of lessening the acticity of the traction control in low range...ie dont turn the switch on and let the vehicle think its in low range (say on soft sand if that is your bent) ...and get to be able to use HDC in high range....very interesting... (actually that last idea of mine is probably crap because it would want to pull the speed down too far...although in an emergency say going downhill with a caravan/boat at say 40kph in treacherous snow/ice you could use it if unable to get to walking pace to select low range).
Cheers
I didnt clean the switch itself, but rather the 2 block connectors that sit attached to the transfer case's side...should I be looking to pull connectors off the switch(s) on the box (if you can access them without dropping the box) if thats possible and cleaning those terminals?
definately worth trying.
You can reach the switch but as usual, it's awkward. Switch is at the top of the front output housing facing forward near where the hi/low cable connects to the transfer.
