    is it ?

well my td5 is i bits at the mechanics. oil cooler is out and has been pressure tested and holds at 80psi, so theres no issue there, i did however drop a heap of oil out of the radiator when i dumped the coolant. mechanic assures me it is the orings on the oil cooler. the car doesnt run hot and only occasionaly dropped a little coolant out of the overflow, maybe once a week i would get some drops out. the thermostat jammed closed the other day which is what caused me to get it looked at. my concern is the amount of oily sludge in the coolant ( lots ) when my oil level didnt appear to have dropped by much. is there any chance the fuel cooler could be leaking into the water system ?? anyone had that. i seem to be using more fuel than when i first bought the car, and dont seem to be losing ay oil. just a little confused at to where its all coming from.

    is it ?

Sounds like you did a head gasket. (Hope I'm wrong) If the vehicle is running the mechanic should be able to do a test on the header tank, which should show leaking head gas into the radiator? Sorry correct terminology escapes me at the moment. Most radiator shops have them and do the test for a nominal price about 20-25 bucks last time I had one done. I haven’t had one that showed a wrong reading yet. Good luck

Could also be that engine oil is being replaced by some other fluid.

The Td5 can still blow a head gasket between the oil gallery port and a water port without interfacing with a combustion fire ring, therefore a TK test will not show anything.
This oil in coolant problem is usually head gasket related in these, but I have seen a few oil coolers let go too.

If it is an early engine, then it still has the plastic dowels. I would be leaning towards still pulling the head...

    Mate,

You poor bastard! Mayonnaise (oil and water mixed together) is a number 1 give-away of head gasket failure. Justinc is right, a TK test won't always tell if you have a blown head gasket, and you don't have to have mayonnaise present either. If you really want to confirm it, perform a compression test, and check for variances between cylinders.

that doesnt work so well on a TD5 as theres no way to test the #5 pot for compression (well not that IVe been able to work out anyway)

well, new t/stat, rad hoses and new orings on the oil cooler , radiator flushed, and cleaned intercooler and modded the exhaust manifold while it was al in bits. seems to run better now and after 1 day driving theres no sludge in the water, time will tell if it was the orings on the oil cooler as we suspected.
