    D2 fixed window seals

    Hey all
The seals on my Alpine and rear (fixed) glass appear to be disintegrating, cracked and "fretted", with a little more disappearing each time I wash it (I know! I could stop washing it ) - leaving crappy black straks on the paint and all over my chamois.

Has anyone replaced theirs? Is it an expensive and/or painful experience?
    Cheers
    Mike

The D2 skyklight windows are bonded in place & the exterior rubber is just a finisher.

The finisher is not available separately from LR as it only comes supplied with the glass but the local O'Briens Glass shop here can supply a finisher that looks even better than the original. Might be worthwhile checking your local glass supplier.

    Excellent!
Thanks for that Scott - I'll give O'Brien's a tinkle...

Does anyone know if the D1 alpine windows are the same, ie: bonded in place?

No, the Series 1 alpine windiws have a rubber seal which is removed by first removing a beading rubber. You will see a small gap in this bead, normally at the top. Cheers, Erich.

    x 2

And hence the propensity for rusting - as I discovered with my D1.

Legend has it the completed shells were left to sit outside at times before continuing on the production line...but it could just be a legend.

Did you get your rust fixed? If so where did you go? cost much?

Can the rubbers be removed and re-used, or do they get destroyed on removal?

The rubbers on the D1 can be reused as long as they are still soft & pliable.

If they've gone hard or starting to crack, then it's best to replace them.

It's a reasonably common repair and most decent panel shops would be able to do it well. Would probably be worth asking your local independent Landy shop if they know of someone.

Mine was a 94 (MY95) facelift and it really became apparent in about 2001. I sold it "as is" in '02 so can't give you much info. I know the new owner (a company) had the rust done as I used to see it now and again for a year or so after and seemed to be fine.

    Cheers
