    TD5 surging and metalic whistle while driving

    Hi,

    Has anyone had this happen to their TD5 before? If so, what was it and how was it fixed? Thank-you.

    I was driving along yesterday and after about 20mins on my way home from work. Made a turn onto another road and then accelerated moderately to gain some speed before a steep incline. The motor then started to surge - felt as if you were too flatten the throttle and back off then flatten and off, etc. Also I noticed a high pitched metalic type whistle.....scary sound!?

    I'm thinking it could be the oil lines feeding the turbo are playing up and sometimes blocking ....perhaps a wastegate problem?

    Check the intercooler hoses first. They can soften with age & collapse causing a similar problem.

    Check turbo hoses for collapsing or ?faulty boost controller or MAF meter?

    Whistling could also be the exhaust manifold studs...had something similar on mine.

    Most likely a Collapsing turbo to intercooler hose, Scouse will give you the part number

    These things are failing like XD falcon exterior door handles!

    I would check the intercooler hoses but if that's ok I would then go for the exhaust manifold stud like McDisco said. I just had mine done. If it sounds like a really badly slipping fan belt it is highly likely that. What happens is the manifold warps and snaps the stud in the head. The gasket is a two ply gasket and the escaping air whistles between the gasket. The manifold needs to be machined and the stud pulled out of the head. My service centre (cant mention because of blog rules) told me it was a regular thing. Cost me about $600 but that was because I had a second battery in the way.
