    TD5 Swapping out rear Hub

    Hi everyone

I have oil on the back of my rear TD5 brake disc. I was advised to remove the ABS sensor and check for oil in the hole as this would be a sure sign that the hub is shot. There was loads in there, so I'm pretty sure I need a new hub.

I was looking in RAVE and see that the hub nut needs tightened to 360 lbs ft. Bloody hell

Does anyone have any bright ideas for achieving this? Is it possible to, for example tighten to 200 lbs ft with a lighter wrench then do a further half turn or something?

I appreciate that this is a key part and needs to be done correctly, but just thought I'd ask anyway.

I have been offered a used hub with the drive shaft still attached for a decent price. Would this mean that the hub nut could still be torqued correctly and the hub just needs attached by the 4 bolts on the back?

Maybe a used hub is a false economy? I'm not sure. I'm still trying to decide what to do.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Cheers

    Hi,

The stake nut your on about just get a long bar then do it up "FT" before bending the locking tab over to ensure it remains in place and you will be OK.

it is best to loosen the nut before removing the wheels as it is on very tight from the factory. before you do it buy the locating screw for the disk as it is always tight and gets screwed up with you having to use a hammer and punch to remove it.

Its an easy job about 30 mins.

Ref the false econemy you might be lucky but the first to go is always the LH one followed about 1000 km by the RH its all down to can you afford $400 for 1 new one or $300 for 2 second hand ones if you can afford it always fit new bearing.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. It looks like I may only be able to get a used hub with the shaft still attached. Will this make it a straightforward job, just removing the 4 rear bolts?

Also, I was looking at RAVE and it mentions using Loctite 640 on the hub. If I get a new one, is it cruical to use 640? I have been looking around for this and it isn't readily available.

Good tip on the breaker bar. I was thinking that I could count the amount of turns to get the stake nut off, and then tighten it up roughly the same amount again.

    Cheers
