No, the colour coding only applies to the 38A blocks used in the 4.0 and 4.6 litre V8 engines.
The 3.9 litre V8 uses a different block. Even though the 3.9 and 4.0 litre engines are exactly the same capacity, the later uses a long snout crankshaft with larger journals, different connecting rods and pistons, and is a fully cross bolted block.
A 4.0 crankshaft will not fit into a 3.9 block.

I did a lot of research beforehand on the suitability of my BW35 running behind the 4.6, and every transmission business that I contacted, including the people who serviced the transmission all assured me that it would be fine, but with the obvious caveat...don't do anything silly, treat it with respect and all will be well.
I don't jump away from lights from a standing start, or "put the boot in" to use kickdown. I just don't need to, the engine has so much torque.
In reality, the transmission works better with the 4.6 than with the 3.5, the torque delivery is so smooth, once in top gear, there is never a need to change down to climb a grade or to overtake. The 4.6 is such a smooth spinning engine too, more so than my 3.5.
I run an additional transmission oil cooler too, but then I have been using one for a good 20 years on my Rover.

My 3.9l is around 226k old, I'm thinking there may not be to many more k's left in it. There are know warning signs or bad noises, just thinking it's getting a bit long in the tooth. I've been thinking about putting a 4.6l in or a 4.0l.. I've been told the auto and transfer case. diffs are all fine. Would the 4.0 and 4.6 just drop straight in or there other changes that need to be considered.

226 is not that old,, lots of 8's run to far bigger numbers,,
its usually only the top-end that wears, cams etc.
mind you,, I'd sell Mrs Pedro for a warm 4.6

Pedro, i,ve already done the heads so you reckon theres a few more k's in it yet. I generally change the oil and filter evry 5000ks at the same time i blow out the air filter. Sometimes sooner, depending what we've been doing.

With the Rover V8, it is not so much how many km the engine has done, but rather how it did them. Regular oil changes, every 5000km with 15W-50 or 60or 20W-50 or 60 along with the filter is the key to longevity. The grades of oil I refer to are for those engines running with the camshaft driven oil pump.
As Pedro mentioned, the top end is what requires replacement first.
Rocker assemblies, camshaft, lifters, timing set, especially if using the Morse set.
What oil pressure does your engine show at idle and while running?

if you are constantly wanting it to go a bit faster,,
look at the clock--
