Hey mate
Try pm'ing tempestv8 (aka Lawrance) as he recently had a liner slip and got a 4.6 put in by Range-Rov. Think it cost around 8 grand. He is on here every now and again so Im sure he will comment.
Lawrance also has his on LPG.

hey everyone
just wondering what people with 4.6L D2's did to convert their vehicles?
Did you use your 4L block and change pistons and crankshaft?
did you buy a 4.6L motor complete with all the bits?
did you have problems with the factory EFI for the 4L working with the 4.6?
My 4L has a slipped liner so its time to either:
1. go a 4.6 new motor
2. repair liner in the 4L and build it back as stock
3. tweak the 4L to give it some more HP's...
any advice/feedback welcome... i am in Melbourne

Rover graded 4.0 and 4.6 litre engine blocks as either blue, yellow or red.The grading system referred to the thickness of metal between adjacent cylinder liners.
The bigger 4.6 used red graded blocks, this being the thickest. If none were available, then they could also use yellow graded blocks.
The 4.0 litre engine blocks would always use blue graded blocks, and these would never be used to make a 4.6. If however blue graded were unavailable, then Rover could use yellow.
If you wish to keep your 4.0 litre engine, then it would be money well spent to have all the liners removed and top hat liners fitted.
If you wish to go to a 4.6, then the same would apply. The bigger 4.6 will give you a big increase in torque, better acceleration, better hill climbing with much less effort.
From first hand experience I can certainly recommend a Land Rover specialist and the name of the person to speak to, but I am not sure if I can mention the business here.
Best of luck,
Ron.
I also have a good 4L from an 03 disco if you want to go down that path, send me a PM.

Following a prompt to "name names", the business that built my 4.6 was Graeme Cooper Automotive, Land Rover Specialists, here at St Peters in Sydney. Have a chat to Ward.
I am running twin SU carburettors on my engine, and Ward made all the necessary adjustments including carving the needles and re graphing a new Lucas distributor that I had to work perfectly with the new engine.
The 4.6 replaced my original 3.5 litre engine... and what a difference!!!
After I had a new exhaust system fitted...2.25" (I went smaller as I run an automatic)..full flow through muffler with a 3" resonator (cannon) at the back.
Sounds amazing...really really deep and loud, did I mention loud!
My 4.6 also returns better fuel economy compared to the 3.5. I have just over 20,000km on my 4.6, so barely run in. Country running at around 100kph sees 24 to 29mpg!!
I am extremely happy with the work undertaken, Graeme and Ward are excellent, and I have no hesitation what so ever in recommending them.
Ron.
I am not surprised at the comment "What a difference" between the 2 motors
I would suggest the better fuel economy is mainly based on the fact that the torque & cubic size of the 4.6 is suited for the weight of the car ... where as the 3.5 is undersized
Interestingly ... you went for 2.25inch exhaust on purpose .... I would have thought 2.5inch would be the go as the headers would have been the main restrictors (required back pressure) ... but hey ... If it works .. don't argue
Those numbers on fuel are quite amazing indeed ... Always amazes me how the basics can outperform all the wizz bang electronic fuel saving devices
The figures of 24 to 29 will catch a load of peoples attention ... Can only take you word for it tho ... I take it that you have the 4 speed overdrive Auto /// and the tyre & diff size is standard issue??
But a well thought out combination of motor parts & balancing does do a lot for motor performance & economy

Hello Mike,
Yes I was very surprised by the fuel consumption figures too. I am always very methodical when it comes to recording and calculating fuel consumption figures, always ensuring that the fuel is measured from the same reference point within the filler neck.
The transmission is the Borg Warner 35, 3 speed, 3.08 : 1 differential. In third gear, 38.5kph per 1000 revs.
My Rover is an absolute joy to drive.
Ron.
US spec D2s are all 4.6 motors.Worth seeing what they are worth to import ex USA????
