    Is My Auto Cactus ?

    Hi experts.
I don't have any expertise in auto gear box problems and would be interested in opinions. As I mentioned in an earlier post My D2 TD5 auto was playing up and topping up the fluid seemed to fix the problem. I then put it in for a service (160,000 km) and was told there was a moderate amount of filings on the pan magnet but they thought it would probably be OK. They changed the filter and fluid etc.

Next went on a trip towing the van and after 500 km I checked the fluid level again. This time it drank about 700 ml, engine running in neutral. The stuff that came out when it started to over flow was a putrid brown colour that did not look like it was mixing real well with the new red Dextron III . Up to then the auto was behaving normally. Having topped up with the new fluid it is now slipping (over revving between gear shifts) and changes can be clunky. The overflow was a surprise as it was heaps worse looking than the earlier time I had topped up even though it had only done 500 km since a full service.

I gather there are clutches in the Auto box and presume this is on its way out. I spoke to an Auto transmission guy who thought the best thing was to replace it with a reconditioned one from ZF. He did not even want to look at it after listening to the story.

My question is it possible that the wrong oil was used (by mistake) at the Service by the apprentice? They are a very small town part time LR agent. If it was the wrong oil would it have operated OK up to the point where I topped up with the new?

Is there any point in trying to flush out the oil as described in other posts to see if it is salvageable? Or should I just bite the bullet and fork out another $3000 to swap for the reconditioned one?

    Your thought appreciated.

yes its possable to have put the wrong oil in....

my opening guess is that at the last service when the oil was due to be changed it wasnt and the stuff in there is now well and truely dead. The dead oil has caused damage in the box (this accounts for your filings) and may have contaminated the material in the lockup plate.

when you do do an oil change on an auto about 15-20% of the oil will remain behind caught up in various galleries and in the TC itself so some immediate contamination of the new oil is to be expected.

I would try one last oil change to help flush out the last of the dead stuff and change or at least clean the strainer in the pan and see what it does then. If its still messing around I would advise that you start to line up a new box and slate a time to change it out.

Rather than change oil .. I believe that flushing out the system is better

We have a company over here in Perth WA called "Oil change Express" .. Located in Mirrabooka

They hook up a line to the Auto and FLUSH new Trans oil through the system .... Run / cycle the gears with the motor running .... which gets & moves all the old oil & crud out of the box & torque converter

I do this to all my cars

Also ..... is the trans cooler setup adequate for towing a caravan .... or should a aftermarket cooler be added???

you got an address for Mirrabooka

can you advise what they charge

93 rangerover done 230,000 km, l have had it since 2005, think it would benefit from a flush and change for the auto, no issues so far like to keep it that way
