    Disco TD5

    I have been shopping around for a late model Disco TD5i and doing some research .I have almost been put off completely by even a specialist Land Rover mechanic who said their electics are too complex and unreliable to make them a genuine reliable remote area 4X4.He said if they break down in the bush you won't get them going.Is this the case?It appears from owners forums that the 3 amigos ABS problem is common and not easily fixed if at all.Is there anybody out there who can convert me back to The Disco? I don't think there is anything out there that stacks up fuel economy wise,off road ability ,comfort,and towing capacity in the latest generation of 4 cylinder turbo diesels. My other option is a late model 100 series Toyota for the live front axel .They are fairly heavy on the juice and fairly gutless when towing. I have owned an FJ45,2 X Hi Luxes,Troopie,80 series(the pick of them) and now a 1993 HZJ75 ute and have had some mechanical problems but always managed to get them home.The off road work is on Cape York across to the territory so the vehicle I choose woild have to be reliable.Lookin g forward to any views,regards lyalld

    Hi and welcome,

    I have a Td5 disco and I love it. Having said that, I got one with a good service history and over the next few months I replaced the wiring loom, a left-front wheel sensor and the fuel block. These are probably three of the most common headaches. I have not had a problem (mechanical of electrical) since.

    If I were planning a cape or desert trip, I think it would be unwise to go in any vehicle that I haven't lived with and prepared over at least a 6 - 12 month period.

    A prepared Disco would be the perfect vehicle for it though.

    I'll take my TD5 D2 anywhere, but I know it and its electronics fairly well. I would like to have a Nanocom diagnostic tool to be able to resynchronise the ecm & immobiliser in the unlikely event that this becomes a problem whilst in a remote area, and possibly a spare throttle position sensor too.

    my TD5 D2 has once had the christmas tree lights go in the middle of the OTR up top . i had Nanocom with me incase of any unfortunate events. however i simply shut down the engine, restarted and all was good. havent had to use the nanocom for anything other than an extra instrument guage set so far. i wouldnt hesitate to take my TD5 anywhere within my limited ability.
    go get one. you wont be disappointed

    I may be shot for this and can I say first that I love my Disco and will take it anywhere, but if I was after a long term outback tourer I would not get a TD5 Disco. Honestly there are vehicles with more space, that are more rugged and that are more 'reliable'.

    But it depends on what you mean by long term. IF you travel 6-9 months of the year or plan to, I would get a defender or even (god forbid) a Patrol. My father has one and I dont particularly like it, but it is what I would call a "Big stupid car". Its a 4.2 turbo diesel and its built like a truck. Its very unlikely that it would let you down...

    And can I say again...I love my Disco and will do every track in Australia in it, but that because I have the sickness....

    The outback is harsh on any vehicle.

    Take a computer driven vehicle out there and you are in the hands of the gods.

    Unfortunately, all new cars are very similar.
    Computers run everything, mainly for economy and to comply with emmission controls.


    Take a Defender with an Isuzu or a tdi.

    I take my landies everywhere but true outback and longterm just spells too much trouble.

    I have had my td5 for about 3 yrs. A little trouble with the front prop shaft,well worth replacing double carden joint , or removing and greasing on areasonable regular basis. Partner calls it the DUTCHESS, I wouldnt part with it for "quids". I live inFNQ bought it with 40thou on clock has 110 now and has done cape and savana trips. Replaced selector shifter [auto] and rerouted aircon drain, raised 2". Go anywhere, great on fuel , comfortable and safe. Three amigos have been beaten SRS came up once figured it out myself, havn't seen since. BUY one and you won't be dissapointed!!!!
