    Question Discovery td5 issues

Hi All, New member, have owned my 1999 disco a few years now 289ks and starting to have too many problems. The main cause this year is exhaust manifolds. Fixed or replaced 5 times this year. Vehicle booked in tomorrow for a full 3" high flow system with mandells to help get rid of excess head heat. These problems are only 3 years in the making only since installing big chip upgrade 40%. Needed to tow 3.7 to 3.9 tonne boat.
If any members have experience with this would be very interested.

I think that you will find the chip and towing to be the root of the problem. EGT's are high, and I'm not sure that 3" is the solution. I'd be looking to tune it down if everything else is in order.
    Cheers

Did u also do the intercooler?
This can help to keep the EGT's down also.
40% increase is a huge jump, especially if u havent done the IC.
As Slunnie has said u may want to try & reduce the power output & go milder.
    Cheers.

An EGT guage is what you need.As said this is probably the source of your problems.

If you can keep the EGT's within reasonable parameters, your problems should dissapear.

did you mod the manifold, theres 2 mods you need to do to it and 1 to the head to replace the studs and it will never happen again.

    1. oval grind the webs on the manifold between the ports
    2. elongate the mouting stud holes on the manifold in the horizontal plane except for the center most holes

    3. helicoil the head for the size studs that you have...

it also helps to use cone washers under the nuts to locate the manifold.

    Hi Marcus,

I assume you probably have an auto.... just wondering if you also require additional transmission cooling towing that sort of weight.....

No it's a manual. The weight is a challange in starting especially in heavey brisbane traffic. Don't have sway bars on trailer as braking system is mounted on the yolk. 70 mm tow ball and big trailer helps. and nurse it. The adventure ends getting home in one piece and without breakdowns.
An example driving thru Dalby end of October. circlip holding fan and bearing onto shaft decided to give up, fan moves forward, belts comes off, belt tensioner becomes distorted and 5 days spent waiting on parts. Only to be redone back at home because the job was not done correctly. More $$$$.
That was 2weeks ago. This week new exhaust, and hopefully remapping.
The love affair continues. But I still love my Disco.

Sounds like you have a unsuitable car for the job

I would buy a smaller boat must be a PIA to handle. (Or an F Truck to to it).
A mate of mine just purchased a F650 to oe his race car its a treat.

    Good Luck with It

Marcus, Piddler hit the nail on the head here. If you are caught by transport towing a 3.9t boat with a vehicle that has a 3.5t tow capacity, you are in for it. But MORE IMPORTANTLY, you have NO INSURANCE as this vehicle is not legally allowed to tow such weights.

Buy a 130DC, they are rated to 4ton, or do what a customer of ours did, bought a 4x4 Isuzu dual cab truck to tow his 4ton boat, previously dragged with his P38a. The NEW isuzu truck, including a steel tray and ON THE ROAD cost him $3k less than a new Toyota L'cruiser(And is twice the vehicle IMHO)

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

Do you use low range in traffic?
