    Question '99 ES Discovery TD5 Fuel consumption

    Hi to all the gurus out there.

    I have not long joined AULRO.
    I have been having low fuel consumption problems not long after I bought the vehicle . I started off getting 27 - 28mpg in the old language. Suddenly it down to 24mpg whether cruising or around town. Had a new "serviced" chipped computer installed, no change.
    I have just changed the MAF andand MAP sensors to no avail. Consumptoin is now slightly worse. The LR characters say there is nothing wrong. Friend are still obtaining 27-30 mpg. Now I am wondering if mine is a friday job.
    I am becoming very frustrated with the dam thing!!! and would appreciate any suggestions
    No, I dont have a heavy foot.

    You might have already tried this, but try changing your air filter or giving it a good clean, i did that recently and my fuel economy improved. Another thing you could try is cleaning the intercooler, and the sensor in the intake manifold. This sensor is easy to clean, just take the plastic cover off, undo 2 8mm bolts and undo the plug and out it comes. Give it a clean and put it back, you should notice an improvement in power as well. Hope this helps

    Tony, you say "Had a new "serviced" chipped computer installed, no change" - was it installed correctly? I.E. injector codes correctly installed to suit your vehicle. Was an early ECM upgraded and installed (same hardware you would have in a '99 model) or a flashable unit (for '02 onwards) re-mapped and installed? See if you can find out.

    As Hendrik says if you have high Ks then intercooler may need a clean.
    The EGR (exhaust gas recurculation) valve may also be gummed up& this can result in high fuel consumption.
    If you search Forums using 'EGR 'you will find a wealth of knowledge on this nasty piece of work that is better blocked off

    Yes I have done this, even borrowed another sensor. It now runs richer and appears to have more power and fuel consumption is slightly down. Am trying another tankfull and will then try the original again

    This valve was disposed of about 12 months ago. It was full of "gunge" for want of a word.
    The intercooler was last cleaned about 2 to 3 years ago. Maybe it needs another clean.

    I sincerely hope the installation was correct, as it was installed by a mob here in Perth who specialize in L/rovers. Will see what I can find out.
    Surely it would run rough if it was out of kilter.
